Default Tau Devil Fish Gun Drones vs. Smart Missiles

I am planning to buy a Sky Ray and convert it to a Devil Fish. Though the Sky Ray kit lacks any Gun Drones but it has the Smart Missile System.

The new Tau codex allows you to use Smart Missiles in place of the Gun Drones on a Devil Fish.

Are the Smart Missiles on the Devil Fish better than the Gun Drones?

Well the SMS offers two more shots with 6" more range and you don't need LOS to shoot. The SMS is also more expensive but I think that it is worth it overall. The drones are free and when in trouble you have a free unit to harass the flanks and pop rear armour. This free unit can help if the DF crashed after FOF leaving it's passengers high and dry. So the two drones come out and hold off the attackers for a turn or two if you lucky making good you escape and allow re-enforcements to arrive.

I much prefer the SMS, allows you to use a warfish, and means that the fish has much more options than simply a bus. Drones are useful though, I use them when I can't afford to buy a SMS.

The skyray is a better buy, because buying the gun drones separately would cost $4 USD, but buying the SMS separately (Hammerhead weapons sprue) would cost $7 USD.

You also have to account for the burst cannon. You can use one of the secondary burst cannons from the hammerhead to function as the devilfish's front burst cannon, but you have to cut off the ammo feed bit and rig up some magnets or other form of mounting. I did it on one tank, not too hard.

I believe the drones are 2.50 USD / drone, actually...

Warfish setup
Disruption Pods, Burst Cannon 7 S5 shots at BS 4= 4.62 hits at 18" LOS or 2.64 hits at 24" non LOS

Devilfish Drone setup
5 S5 shots at the equivalent of BS3 ( Twin linked BS2 is 50% chance to hit after rerolls)
2.5 Hits at 18%

The warfish setup almost doubles your combat effectiveness for 30 points. THis doesnt include the extra range and non-LOS cudos for having the SMS.

By Disruption pods, don't you mean targetting Array? They're two completely different things. I agree, Warfishes are useful, as getting hit with 7 S5 shots is enough to give anyone pause, and could easily deter some people from going after the devilfish, or at least making them regret it if they did.

Perhaps no one is asking for good reason, but I can't help but wonder why you are converting a skyray into a devilfish when you can just get a devilfish for less money.

Because if you buy a skyray, you have the option of using it as a HH or DF because you get the parts, so, if you don't use the 'ray in a game, you can use it as a HH or DF, instead. It wouldn't be that hard to convert a HH into a 'ray and back, just pop the turret. for a DF, just pop the turret, also (if you are using a warfish, that is, and assuming you have a SMS equipped on the HH/'ray), then mod the lower turret so it can be taken off, (a good place to use strong magnets), and pop it off, put in the BC, and pop it back on...That's why

Correct! Targeting array, had a momentary brain fart while converting my latest crisis suit.
