Default Female Tau: A question or five

How many firewarriors do we think are there? Percentage wise? Is Shadowsun the only one? Or is there an equal mix of both sexes but the uniform armour hides this fact from us?

Thoughts?
Fluff?

mmm this is mysterios i think they are probably equally mixed because the tau are all "for the greater good" which means they are probably very not sexist.

Who says Tau reproductive biology leads them to having equal numbers of males and females? Humans only really need to have equal numbers because of long pregnancies and multiple babies being unusual (until extremely recently). The background suggests that a Shas female would be trained like a Shas male (the castes have fixed roles), but for all we know there are very few Shas females or more Shas females then Shas males (which is perfect for an expansionist empire that puts the group before the individual). Also their biology could mean that procreation wouldn't make the Shas female effectively an invalid for several months (laying eggs for example).

Well your standard pregnacy only really stops someone from normal tasks during the last 2-3 months, and if it was not possible to take her off the lines as it were, she could still take part in work behind the lines, helping command etc, heck if she's a high enough rank she could still fight on in a Crisis suit...

I'd say it's probably 50/50. Not just because I have no idea and am making a guess but I look at it in several ways.

When we think of their government structure the words "socialism" and "communism" come to mind. They want an equal society in terms of everyone's well-being, not necessarily that they all do the same things and have the same things, more like quality of life. When you think about that the only way to ensure that everyone has the same quality of life is for everyone to do military service if there's any service at all. Otherwise you'd ruin the harmony you were trying to create because the quality of life wouldn't be the same for everyone.

From a social structure it's important to keep in mind that the Tau are HIGHLY reminiscent of modern paganism. From the five castes matching up near-identically with with the five basic elements (heck, even the wisdom of a pentagram can be DIRECTLY applied, word-for-word, to the lines in the Tau Codices about the purposes behind each caste) to the concepts of equality, duality, and the like, it's almost a direct copy. If you're going to do that it only makes sense to recognize the masculine and feminine as equal and in terms of who should fight a decision between equal possibilities is obvious...send both.

Just the way I look at it.

yes, normal tasks. defending the empire from oncoming hordes of greenskined killers is not a normal task. not to mention that is human pregnancy, we dont know if tau pregnancy is the same. also, would tau females be physically inferior for fighting to males as is the case with humans? because if that is so then females would probably be given logistics jobs as most modern armies do.

I personally work on the basis there is no physical difference, save genitally, between male and female Tau; they are equally strong, equally fast, equally smart. Hell, I don't even like the "tau with breasts" approach!

In the book Firewarrior, which I consider, like all Black Library Novels, to be nothing more then fanfiction, but I bring it up none-the-less, Tau Females are described as having slightly thinner legs. That's the only difference I can remember reading about in anything.

You mean, When you think of their government structure the words "socialism" and "communism" come to your mind. I just think of them as the Tau.

No it's not. Works of fiction do not have to be viewed through the lens of a convoluted social analogy. They can simply be viewed in the light of what they are in the context of their own fictional world.

Given that Tau training and fighting styles involve pulling a trigger and teamwork, I would say that nothing short of drastic gender differences would make any difference to their effectiveness at all.

They are descended from birds, many of which have no external differences, so I kind of follow a similar approach. I think that half of the firewarriors on the sprues are designed to be female already. Can't tell the difference? That's because the differences are internal.

Don't tell me that you fell for the MTV lie?
The MTV lie is that people who rebel against tradition are thnking for themselves, while those who follow tradition are just sheep who do not think.
It is, of course, completely untrue. The decision to follow tradition is just as much an exercize of free will as is the decision to depart from it.

Or just too minor for us notice.
"what are you talking about? of course those three are female! LOOK!"
"er... oh yeah, of course... how could I have not seen... er... ... whatever it is you're pointing at....?"

Most likely the helmet or armor are hiding everything. Tau are generally thinner and smaller, so if physically similar (breasts and all) but far thinner/smaller than humans in the first place, these traits would likely be well hidden, what with the training/fitness involved with a military life.

Kinda like those bodybuilder women that take it a little too far?
