Default Tau Starter

Hello Tau-lovers.
I just started an Tau Army and got myself following items:
Battleforce, Codex, Tau Crisis Battlesuit commander, Hammerhead, XV8 Battlesuit

Is this a good startup, or should I get more of certain items?
I saw that alot of setups are with alot of XV8 Battlesuits, how much should you have to build a nice army?

Another question,
I play with my friend who's playing the Space Marines - Black Templars.
Now with my Hammerhead is very strong, he has landspeed which has Deepstrike. If it strikes good, and comes close to my Hammerhead I'll HAVE to go in close combat. Are there any tactics to get this Landspeeder down asap? Because if I stay in close combat with it forever, I'll never get the chance of using my Hammerhead.

Cheers,

vehicles can't lock you into close combat. they can't charge you unless they have a WS attribute.

if he has drop pods however, that's a different story, and the stuff that comes out of it can definitely charge u on his next turn.

his deepstriking landspeeders can cause you grief even without close combat. armed with a heavy bolter, and an assault cannon, it can rip up one of your fire warrior units pretty bad. (4-5 dead fire warriors a turn) and has a good chance to knock your hammerhead around a bit as well. with the rending shots.

your initial purchases looks solid, though the more the merrier as always.

SeppaR, looks good.

As for how many suits I run... depends on the size of the game. At under a 1000 pts I run only one team. At 1000 to 1500 I run two teams. After 1500, I run three full teams. I just love the Crisis suits =^.^=

Welcome to the Forums!

I would just take a Target Lock on your Hammerhead. If he deep-strikes his Land Speeder, you should already be moving, in which case it is less of a threat to you. If you stay near the table edge, he will not have a good place to deep-strike while staying in your rear or side arcs. If you take a Target Lock, you can use the SMS or Burst Cannons to shoot it down while your Railgun targets other enemies. As Knight Actual noted, Land Speeders are not a threat in assault, as they can not engage in close-combat themselves, and are too small to tank-shock.

Your basic army looks just about ideal for starting out.

But don't the Black Templars (Although that's what he told me) have this special rule that obligate you to go in Close Combat? He said that if your unit is 6inches away from his Landspeeder, I'm obligated to go in close combat with it.

he is obligated to, but he can't so no matter how much the dude sitting in the speeder wants to, he can't... they can't charge. read up on the vehicle movment and assault

you can tell him that if he wants to charge, go and park the speeder first

oh... erm... let's see, 1850 pts, i'm running 3 monats... an O, an el, and a 'vre, with a team of 3 'uis

a tricked out Shas'o with PR/CIB/Mpod, etc
a Tricked out shas'el with FB/Mpod/VRT, stimm, heavy armor, etc
a shas'vre monat with AFP/TLBC, eject, etc
a threesome helios team with 2 shield drones

i have a couple o burning eyes lying around too.. 3 of em with mpods on the 3rd hard point, but i wanted to use the xv15s so they're staying in the box tonight.

speeders / tanks are not bound by that rule, which is optional, as he must take a vow to get that special rule!

So just hang back, and blast the buttocks out of his speeder!

Crisis Suits and Broadsides are taken in units of 1-3 suits, whereas Stealthsuits are taken in units of 3-6.
