Default My guide to eldar slaying

Ive been playing warhammer 40k for nearly a year now but i have had many battles against eldar so heres how i ususally take them out:

The Avatar:

Deadly is CC, well i assume so by watching allies be butchered and reading the eldar codex but i have never let it kill a single tau! With toughness 6 (i think?) and both normal and invunerable save of 5+ when wounded this thing has a 66% chance of losing a wound. My advice is not to waste railgun fire on it but to unleash some massed pulse rifle fire, you can even wait unitl it comes into rapid fire range although i like to get it out of the way before that.

Farseers:

My friend never attatches these to squads, just leaves them within 6" of another squad so that they can stay safe from fire for a while. They can be annoying with guide usually being used for his fire prism or wriathlords and fortune wraithlords, gaurds, avatar etc. generally troops he would like to maul me with in CC! Mind War can be a huge pain too....commanders and broadsides falling foul to that. So...if he wanders in the open hit him with a railgun is my motto as a failed save means instant death.

Warlocks:

Usually attatched to wraithgaurd or gaurdians (to give them that annoying 5+ cover save...), I have no real tactic to kill these guys, theyre not very tough, only one wound so i just mow through the squad theyre in and take them down with it.

Banshees: He dosent have any.....
Warp Spiders: Ditto
Hawks: None
Fire Dragons:

These guys make excellent fire squads, they have superb anti tank and high toughness low save units (battlesuits), especially the exarch. I either use massed pulse rifle fire or keep battlesuits moving in, firing, then out again. These guys weakness is a farily short range weapons so exploit that. Also, if you have a hammerhead with railgun (and this works with most aspect warriors with 4+ saves), a nice ordance template submunitions blast, will be 2+ to hit (markerlighted just to make sure!), 2+ to kill!

Striking Scorpions:

I usually have to face a squad of these infiltrated into cover, making them perilously close to my lines. They are great combat troops as i have found out so this should be very high on the priority list, especially if they are within charging range, i reccomend going in plasma rifle rapid fire range then flying back 6" to get out of charge range.

Wraithgaurd:

Toughness 5, Save 3+, these guys are hard to kill, but have to be stopped before they get into CC (well thats the aim for any tau army!) or they get within 12" of a unit your fond of, wraithcannons are seriously deadly weapons! Negating all saves and INSTANT death on a 6 to hit i make these guys battlesuit targets, as they can move within shootoing range then move back out of wraithcannon range in the assault phase. They are susally accompanied by an avatar in my experience so all in all this is a high priority, (and high points cost) squad to target.

Dire Avengers:

Fairly good in combat, exarch can be nasty but are easy to take down in pulse rifle shooting when they get to rapid fire range, potenitally harmful to Tau but only careless (or unlucky!) commanders will let these get to your lines.

Rangers:

As my friend somtimes plays alitoch these guys are real annoying, as are pathfinders, but luckily hes changing to biel-tan so i wont have to face having all my broadsides pinned/put in reserve on the first turn! They do have very nice weapons (especially pathfinders), but have a high points cost for rubbish armour and toughness. Stealth teams can mow these down with their massed burst cannon fire.

Gaurdians:

Alone theyre weak and pulse rifles are 4+ to hit, 2+ to kill, but often accompanied by a warlock and always given weapon support platforms to give them better stayign power and shooting power. However, a whole squad can be killed in a turn (1500pts..) so these guys should never worry you too much, thyre not even good in CC, and even aginst tau!

Warwalkers: Dusnt Have
Shiningspears: dont know what they are, needless to say he has none.

Jetbikes:

Ive rarely (twice?) faced these guys, ussually because of their high points cost they are not fielded, however they are fast and with a good save can prove a problem to tau in CC(I seem to be using that phrase a lot!) so deal with them how you see fit, they go about in the middle on my prority list...

Wraithlords:

Too cheap in my opinion but their weakness is most definately no invunerable save....In my experience they always carry starcannons and with toughness 8 are virtually invincible in close combat aginst tau. Ive heard peope say these guys are overated but i fear this more in combat than the avatar, usually first on my priority list, railguns are the only way to go here... My opponent usually fields 2 in 1500pts so i have my work cut out to take both down before reaching my lines.

Vypers:

Strengths- excellent armament choices, usually star cannon vs me. However 10 armour means its ever so fragile, its has an annoying holofield my firend gives it so it dosnt count as open topped and i have to roll 2D6 and apply the lowest on the vehicle damage table. Nevertheless, it dosnt take a lot of stopping but if i have the first go i try and take this out (any weapon will do, id say railguns are overkill on it though) because otherwise it will move 6" each turn and i cant score penetrating hits.

Fire Prism:

Awesome weapon, again fitted with a holofield, i use the same steps as before for the vyper, but use railguns, if i have the first turn AP1 weapons that score glancing hits on it will be penetrating hits so its very usefukl if this can be killed sooner rather than later.

Flacon and Wave Serpent: See fire Prism (wave serpent should be a higher prioity than other tanks for obvious reasons, it will probably contain something like scorpions or banshees!)

Dark Reapers:

Excellent weapons to use against battlesuits...id kill them with stealth suit, however they wouldnt be a high priority for me

The things i ve left out ive never had to face but heres my general strategy:
1) Take out transports (hopefully the units carried insdie will be damaged in the explosion)
2) Take out FAST assault troops
3) Take out wraithlords
4) Take out tanks
5) Avatar and Wraithgaurd
6) Anything else that lives!

Although you may at first think that killing all assault troops first is best there is some point in getting rid of tanks or units with nasty guns, you may say that if youve taken out all his assault troops the battle will just be a fire fight, no prizes for who will win that. But those tanks will be taking out your mane firepower (broadsides, crisis suits etc.) negating your ability to that out their assault troops. Therefore you need a healthy balance of what your taking out. Oh and 1 last thing, remember what the objective of the mission is! Dont just sit back and blast the enemy to shredds when your ment to be captruing the an objective! It would be embarrassing if they had just one squad left and it captured the objective with 6 turns up! Always be aware of the bigger picture.

Phew long post!
For the greater good!

WOW!!! ;D great guide

very useful, i play tau myself and play against iyaden (or sumthing like that) eldar. My opponent fields 3 wriathlords (CHEESE!) and still dosent win the majority of the time!

Few questions, u say your friend is changing to biel-tan...to beat you! i wouldnt worry, theyre not really that good. Banshees can look amazing at first but with 4+ saves and T 3 they are weak to a good round or fire warrior shooting. I was wondering does he have any phoenix lords? The dire avenger one is the most annoying (3+ invunerable save, look at him, hes puny!!)
How many games have you won against this guy, roughly % wise? it sounds like you find'eldar slaying easy'!

cheers village idiot! the guy i play against has 2 wraithlords in a 1500 pt army which isnt too cheesy i suppose!
He used to have asuryman (??) the dire avenger exarch who does hav a stupidly good invunerable save but can be instant killed. I think hes gonna get maugan ra the fire dragon phoenix lord, i know nothing about this guy so a little adivice would be good here!
To answer your second question i have lost just the once (amazing really!) although coming close a few times, i usually ally with him though, tau and eldar makes a good pair. I better not say anyhting nasty because he posts here! (Tau-killer), but would i ever! I feel that when he changes his crafworld our matches wil be a lot more close!

There are six official phoenix lords - Maugan Ra, Jain Zar, Karandras, Baharroth, Fuegan and Asurmen. Maugan Ra is basically a dark reaper with better stats who is more dangerous in cc. Jain Zar is a howling Banshee and is lethal in cc but no good firepower weapons. Karandras a striking Scorpion is just like Jain Zar. Baharroth is a swooping hawk and as such is extremely fast and deadly in cc. Ideal for hit and run attacks. Fuegan is the fire dragon one and has magnificent firepower and anti tank abilities. Asurmen, you already know about
