Default Advanced stabilization system (legality and usefulness)

OK, the codex states that if a unit activates the advanced stabilisation system, it gains the Slow and purposeful special rule, but cannot make an additional jetpack move. So...

You have no use in giving an XV8 the advanced stabilisation system, because rapid fire weapons may still be fired at maximum range, even if they move (jetpack special rules) and they can only choose rapid fire or assault weapons.

But if you give an XV88 the advanced stabilisation system, it could move and shoot its heavy weapons, but XV88 have no jetpack. So...

If you would give an advanced stabilisation system to an XV88, can you make a jetpack move?

But then again, this move would be useless, since it cannot fire it's heavy weapons...

Unless you would give it a plasma rifle, then it could move out of cover, shoot, and move into cover again, just like an XV8.

Is this legal?

Unfortunately, no. The Broadside is always basic infantry. It may never make a jetpack move. It is just a strangely-worded rule. There is no reason to take the Stabilization System on any of GW's Crisis suits, as far as I can tell.

Agreed. The XV-88's codex entry lists it as "Infantry", and the suit only gives it the acute senses special rule- other suits get deepstrike.

Just a poorly worded rule like so many the Broadside doesnt get a jet pack ever so can never make a jet pack move. I assume that some new "heavy" weapons were in design for the crisis suits but were dropped and the wording on A.S.S. was not changed accordingly. Though I suppose it might be useful on a commander with a Rail Rifle medusa v upgrade... maybe.

Or a commander wearing either XV-81 or XV-84 armour mounting either a Smart Missile System or Target lock.

For example XV-84 shas'el,

Markerlight, ASS, Targetting array, blacksun filter
88 points

That gives you an untargettable IC who can still move and fire a BS 5 markerlight. Not the most effective unit ever, but not terrible.

Have we heard back yet about stealths and ASS? Would marker drones get the benifit of ASS?

I kinda doubt it. It's a Battlesuit support system, not a drone support system. You don't see gundrones running around with target locks, now do you?

Plus, fluffwise it would be kinda hard to make the drones walk (since with A.S.S. you can't use the jetpack).

Jet/Jump infantry is a type of unit, whilst slow and purposeful is a universal special rule. Marker drones with broadsides are still basic infantry, and wouldn't normally benefit from a rule or upgrade the controller has.

I believe sniper drones have target locks if I'm not mistaken. The Advanced stabilisation rule states that if one model takes it all do, and drones are the same unit type as the owner. The rule also says that battlesuits still may take drones. It's very ambiguous to me.

(Still talking about stealths)

A.S.S. only benefits the wearer. The sniper drones are irrelevant as each drone is given a TL, they are not using the TL that the spotter has. Note that the entry says "the battlesuit may use the S&P" nothing about the unit becoming S&P, and the unit is INFINTRY, so the drones count as INFINTRY, again it has nothing to do with the S&P rule.
