Default Ethereals and Shas'o

I saw that Shas'o are 1+, so if you have an Ethereal in your army, must you still have a Shas'o commander? Or does the 1+ simply relate to an HQ, no matter what kind of?

must have a shas'O, Even if you take an Ethereal.

Hi, and welcome to TO!

The 1+ requirement is for crisis commanders. The normal game rules already require an HQ for all armies. Ours is above and beyond that requirement.

This means you must take a Shas'O OR a Shas'El.

Yeah you have to take a Commander Crisis suit making a cheaper Etheral choice almost out of the picture, so why did they make more?

Who knows, it makes sense fluff wise but now its not possible to field an entire army of just tanks, you always have to have at least one crisis suite.

which is not such a huge drawback b/c they get IC status protection anyways.

True but IC doesnt always help, a Vindicare or a ton of drop pods or deep strikers will get around that anyway and there have been times where an etherial with honor guard in a fish to support the rest of the mechanized army is really drawing. Against some opponents tanks are just a lot more durable and can really help even the odds in some cases like against a cc oriented drop pod or infiltrating troops especially en mass. IC is good but its not perfect and there are sometimes where that anime esque battlesuite gets annoying.

Remember an IC does nothing for scoring purposes. That is why it is best in my opinion to take a cheap throw away command squad. I run 2x Shas'els in my army that are deep striking sunforge suits. 78 pts a piece, if the destroy 1-2 tanks a game and get killed they are worth it for the following reasons

2x Predator Tanks is about 250 pts or 1x landraider and both are also scoring units that can give my opponent 250 extra VP pts at the end of the game by holding an objective or table quarter

2x Shas'els with TL: FB and TA is 156 pts. They can't hold ground, contest objectives nor do they give me any bonus VP. They are expendable as IC's and you shouldn't be worried about them getting killed unless you kit them out which is wasting pts in my mind

I would do that for gaming but I just don't for fluuf reasons. Commanders should not be kamikazies. So I take one who is good, and survives (usualy) and one in the config the same as yours. That one I just say is dishonoured and must do something noble to get his honour back blah blah blah. He survives half the time too which is great.
