A lot of what to get is going to come down to what exactly you want to do, and what your play style is. For instance on my list I take a full broadside team of 3, a sniper team of 3, and a hammer head. In the army list section ive never seen anyone else do this, but I like to because I spent a lot of time modding those Broadsides and they are actually some of my favorite models in the Tau army.

I also love the new stealth suits and they have never let me down, but you need to decided if you want to play a Mobile army that can get to your enemy fast or an army that has a smash mouth style to keep your enemy on his heels and beat him down under a hail of Tau firepower or do you want a combination of both?

Ok your poll was funny and I voted NO but I will offer my limited advise.

Start with the Tau Battle Force. It is about $130 CDN or $50 pounds or about $80 USD though you can get it cheaper in some places and the Tau Codex $20

In this box set you will get

1x Crisis Suit
3X Stealth Suits
12x Fire Warriors
12x Kroot Carnivores
1x Devilfish

A nice starting set for a 400-500 point game. After you paint/assemble this army you will be able to play a lot of small games to learn the rules before investing in a large army. If you are just starting out I wouldn't advise anyone to buy 1000 or more points as it takes time to assemble/paint etc and you don't know all the abilities.

As you learn the game fundamentals you will simutaneously be learning how you like to play. Do you like fewer models and more mobility (harder to play) or lots of models and little mobility (little easier because of the sheer number of models) or a mixture of the two.

Also it is nice if you have a GW store near you or a hobby store that supports the GW products so you can go and speak to staff or watch other people play.

There is also a plethora of information on this website and you can start here to get an idea. Lots of information http://forums.tauonline.org/index.php?topic=4815.0

Hope it helps and welcome to a fun game and a great army

Nice poll. I agree with the Farseer, with one comment. If you don't already have the BGB (main rulebook), then you should get it ASAP- maybe even before you buy any models.

This is a weird poll indeed. I will help you then.......

First and foremost;Get a codex. This will help alot.

As tanis says, it is a good placve to start with a Tau battleforce. This will be your core force. Then it is time to have a ffew games. You will know what gaming style suit you best. Then, you will add those new-found theories on you force and add on units that suit your particular style.

You could also look on Ebay for the Battle of Macragge rule book. It has all the core rules and is only $15

Sounds like you're set for the Battleforce and the piranha squadron box, then

For what little I have yet learned about the game (mostly from living here for a couple of months), the advice you've got so far is Very good.
The battleforce is generally considered both cheap (for a GW product) and well planned to get you started all in one go.
-And if you find Tau is not your kind of force, reselling it won't hurt your wallet too hard...

Good luck!
