Default Broadside and Railgun question

I used my Tau army for the first time last night and we ran into a discrepency. The Broadside has a twin-linked Railgun. The model obviously has a railgun n each shoulder. The question that arose is: Do I roll one die to represent the railguns or 2 die, one for each shoulder mounted railgun?

When it comes to the actual dice rolling you roll 1 dice, if you hit great, if not you may reroll the dice. However it is only a single shot. The two guns are supposed to represent increased accuracy not increase shots.

Also note that only the hammerhead rail gun can fire the sub-munition round.

The Twin Linked Rail Guns are really just one weapon with the ability to re-roll a miss. So roll one die, if it misses, re-roll. The same goes with Twin-linked weapons on Crisis Suits.

FYI: alot of people make these kind of mistakes, so I just want to point them out to you. Neither the Hammerhead tank, or the Broadsides have Twin-linked Smart Missle Systems, and they are not 2 seperate Smart Missiles Systmes. Despite what they look like, both pods represent only 1 Smart Missile System.

++well in game terms, you fire one shot from the broadside and if you hit then your cool, if you miss it means you can re-roll it once and once only (i mean i don't think it can carry 12 railguns!?!)++

Thats probably the biggest mistake i see at my LGS with Tau players, people rolling 8 dice for each believing they are two SMS.....they always give me evil looks when i put them straight. >

Yes, I always found that confusing. I never rolled more than 4 die since that is how I was taught, but I was wondering: Why would GW put "2" SMS systems, if it really only represented one?

I always rolled 4 dice. It seems sort of obvious to me, the rules say I upgrade to 1 sms, so I get 4 shots. I mean seriously, since when does a model override something clearly stated in the codex?

hey guys, instead of making a separate thread i just thought id chuck this in here, since it has to do with broadside railguns. me and my mates have heaps of house rules we umm, like. to make games abit more interesting for us. but we develope them together so were not overpowering each other.
anyway, special issue weapon upgrade.

submunition ammo (special issue): this upgrade may be taken by braodsides for their railguns, enables a smaller submunition shot then normal to be fired from a broadsides railgun. everything is as normal, except the railgun now has these characteristics
rng:72" str:6 AP:4 small blast marker.

10pts

relatively cheap because its not really that useful. but works ok against tyranids, sometimes. can kill three if your lucky. its still twinlinked too.
sorry if this is too much off topic

to bad the broadside shas'vre can't take special issue stuff

it would make it very useful and make you want to take multi trackers with SMS
