Default Math Hammer: Helios vs. Burning Eye

For quite a while now I'm pondering wether to use Helios or Burning Eye battle suits. Now I dabbled in some math hammer and came to this arithmetic, but it seems kinda wrong to me:

Burning Eye (without TA): 3/4 (to hit) * 5/6 (to wound) = kill chance of 0,625 for one shot (24" range) or 1,25 for two (12" range).

Helios: 1/2 (to hit/PB) * 5/6 (to wound/PB) = 0,416 (on 24") + 0,426 (rapid fire) + ( 1/2 (to hit/FB) * 5/6 (to wound/FB) ) = 1,248 (on 12")

My point is that I always thought the Helios provided more firepower against infantry on 12", but according to this it is slightly worse. So the only advantage seems to be, that it kills heavy tanks as well. But still Burning Eye has the better firepower and leaves place for another support system.

Actually, Burning Eye is identical to Helios at 12" on non-TA Shas'Uis/Vres:

BS3:
12" or less
Burning Eye: 2 * 3/4 * 5/6 = 30/24 = 5/4
Helios: 3 * 1/2 * 5/6 = 15/12 = 5/4
Burning Eye is 50% better at 12"-24".

However, Helios is better at BS 4 or 5:

BS 4:
12" or less
Burning Eye: 2 * 8/9 * 5/6 = 80/54 = 1.481
Helios: 3 * 2/3 * 5/6 = 30/18 = 1.666
Burning Eye is 33% better at 12"-24"

BS 5:
12" or less
Burning Eye: 2 * 35/36 * 5/6 = 350/216 = 1.620
Helios: 3 * 5/6 * 5/6 = 75/36 = 2.083
Burning Eye is 16.6% better at 12"-24"

On the other hand, Burning Eye does have room for a TA, so in general, a Burning Eye with a TA is all around better than a Helios. Helios, however, benefit much more from Markerlights, and the standard Helios with 1 Markerlight hit (so BS 4) is better than a Burning Eye with TA and 1 Markerlight hit (so BS 5).

Presicely. The Helios works better on higher BS units. Which is why I say its one of the best configs for a commander to take, especially a Shas'O or shas'el with TA. Its close ranged yes but with IC status and the improved BS it can work wonders.

Thanks a lot. So under 12" Helios would be a far better choice. Now I prefer to have my battle suits as far as possible from the enemy, so I wouldn't like a close distance as 12"(18"). Plus the suits would be independent from markerlights. But then again the rapid-fireing ability of the FB would be completely wasted. Do you think the increased security justifies that decreased firepower? Yes, I guess it's a matter of playing style, but yet I haven't really had that much games to actually get somehting like a preferred playing style.

I'm a Fireknife/Deathrain and Helios man myself. My railguns never seem to do anything when they penetrate, and I've recently used the FB as last resort tank removal.

I think if you really want space between your suits and the enemy Deathrain is probably the best config. The rapid firing of you PR just seem wasted if you are always (30") away. They are definitely better than a Helios though.

Try the Burning Eye out for a bit, but remember don't glue them guns on!

For commanders I prefer helios-6 instead of the targetting array. The plasma is more accurate and the fusion less, but the plasma is used far more often.

Quick rundown of Helios-6 vs. Helios+ on a Shas'El (they cost the same):

12" or less
Helios-6: 2 * 8/9 * 5/6 + 1 * 2/3 * 5/6 = 80/54 + 10/18 = 110/54 = 2.037
Helios+: 3 * 5/6 * 5/6 = 75/36 = 2.083
Helios-6 is 6.66% better at 12"-24"

The differences are so small it almost doesn't matter.

Yeah, but a reroll feels really good, is very annoying, and is hard to fail. =D
