Default Tau Sept Markings.

So i'm starting tau and have decided to do the Au'Taal sept.. i have a question about the sept markings (the stripes that identify the squad) tho.. is there any set pattern to them?
The codex mentions the makrings are throw-backs to the old fire cast tribes...

So do i just make up random paterns for my stuff or is there a list somewhere of what some mean?

Thanks

Welcome to the forums!

The caste markings appear to be random patterns of closely-space dots and vertical lines. Basically, just the marks you see in the color pages of the Codex. I've never seen any description of what individual symbols mean, as they do not seem to be related to the written Tau language. The updated codex did set specific colors for the various septs, so you would be using green if you wanted to follow them. It appears that the same marking goes on the rifle and helmet for a whole squad.

Okey, I'm wondering about something within the same thing, so I thought I would post it here, if you don't mind.

What is the sept colour for the Dal'yth Sept? I can't find it in the Codex

If there's no Sept colour make it up!

For example my army is from Tau'N the first Tau colony. No colour is marked for them in the codex, so I'm using Regal Blue. I think it looks like a nice dignified colour and it contrasts with the red armour i've used nicely.

I use a simple 'higher rank get more stripes'-scheme (mainly to keep tabs on what I can put on the table), so a shas'la is 1 fat 1 thin stripe, shas'ui is the same + a dot.
shas'vre get a double fat stripe and a thin one, dot the second fat stripe.
And so on...

As far as I know, GW doesn't use any system in their pics, just a random set of stripes that 'look good'.

I'm thinking we need to do a big poll to decide what color to use for Dal'Yth. It's the most popular sept... GW may have realized that and thought that since there are so many different color schemes it would be bad to name one... or maybe they just left it out. T.T

Probably because of the numerous color schemes but oh well. I dont think GW will ever give us set color schemes besides the T'au homeworld sept colors. We cant really say that all Dal'yth forces are blue like we can say all Ultramarines are blue or Imperial Fists are yellow. Would be nice though to bring some uniformity.

My sept is Dal'Yth as well, I'm using a dark purple, as it's a very regal and cosmopolitan colour. If you look in the opening pages of the old codex, tho, there is that Dal'Yth PF squad, but thier squad markings are blood red...which won't work because that's Vior'la. Anyways, it's not really set, so just do whatever you want, really, and if it becomes official, they're very small things to re-paint, so don't worry about it much.
