Default Getting Back into 40k

I registered for this forum quite a long time ago and had since stopped playing 40k for sometime. I havnt looked too carefully at what new stuff has come out, and I saw the other day that a new Tau codex has come out. Im planning to get back into the game and use my Tau army which is storred in a closet somewhere. Before I buy the new codex, two questions.

1) Has the new codex changed the Tau radically enough that I will need to make alot of major new purchases, or could I upgrade my existing army to fit the new codex.

2) Without going into a huge amount of detail and violating some kind of copywrite law, what are some general changes that have been made to the army in the codex (i.e. "better fast attack", or "upgraded elite unit"), and any new rules that apply the the game as a whole that may affect the Tau strategy.

Thanks,
Grimvail

You can quite easily upgrade your army, thats pretty much what Ive been doing.

Other than some minor points changes for the costes of units and wargear the Piranha was added, the Vespid were added, the Sniper Drones and the Skyray all of these however are support units and none are main line units so simply upgrading with a few of them is perfectly fine. Shield Drones have also been fixed and stealth suits have access to fusion blasters and support systems.

To answer in a very general way;
Well.. I don't think you absolutely Have to get it, but there are enough changes to the Tau armoury that you are at a disadvantage without the new Dex.
(Also, stats for the new units are damn hard to find in the old one)

Major purchases.. lessee..
We have the sky ray, sniper & drones, vespids, a bunch of armoury 'special issues', the XV22, piranhas...
So, depending on your personal preferences after reading up on the units, I'd say even a partial upgrade Can be a short road to poverty.

It's a hobby.
It's supposed to hurt your wallet

well if you give us a little bit of a peak into your old army we could probably help you a lot more. *but as Vash113 stated we have just had some pretty minor changes, the old strategies are still quite viable and a lot of new spins have been added to them. *mainly just some small things but then some larger things like the three new units Skyray (not new but its in the codex) pihranna (same as Skyray) and Vepid.

Yea Ive got to dig out my old army and figure out what is still intact. Once I do that Ill post it up here for some reviews. I remember posting it long ago and the consensus was generally positive.

Well judging from that your going to have to make a crisis suite a shas'el or o they are now 1+ in the Tau army just like Firewarriors you have to have one. Other than that looks like a fairly traditional list of the time.
