Default I'll never underestimate shield drones again!

My Shas'O has a Marker Drrone and a Shield drone. Pricey but worth it. I was playing a game, and my Shas'O (plus bodyguard) took three melta gun hits and a plasma gun hit. They would have been decimated had it not been for the clever little shield drone. It saved all of the hits, meaning that My Shas'O could go on to enact his vengeance to those squads.

Moral of the story is: don't be afraid to spend points on stuff.

You played incorrectly.

3 melta, 1 plasma.

All hit.
Rolled against T4 (majority toughness rules).
All wound.
Mixed armour rules....one hit allocated to commander and shield drone(majority armour at 3+), then one to the marker drone(4+), then one to either the shield or Commander. So, give one melta hit to the shield drone, one plasma hit to the Commander, one melta hit to the marker drone and the final melta to the shield drone again.
Hit on the marker drone instant kills.
Shield drone saves both melta hits.
Commander takes a wound from plasma but doesn't get insta-gibbed.

This could be solved if only they'd give Space Marines access to Commissars. "I'm sorry brother Amaleius, there isn't room for you in the transport" *BANG*. "Alright, men, let's get moving".

i dont necesarily like to go with expensive stuff but things that i like as options. for example i love to use flamers so i used a unit that had a TL flamer and SG that deep struck. likewise i love to use shield drones so i try to grab as many as i can of those.

Hm, I agreee with lonely tau and Rechar here.

I understand if the fancy stuff really, REALLY works. But most of the time it is just a big waste of points, and those points deserved to be used somewhere else.

A fearless static unit that hits on 2+? Excellent!

But what happens when two assault squads come barreling down the table?

What are you going to do when they come for you?

A mistake most people make when crunching the numbers is that the real assualt threats of the enemy are threats because they move so quickly. If a unit has a 6" move, it is probably shooting you.

well first of why not just use your independant character status to avoid shots back and also i dont need to be rude but what in earth made you decide to give a bs 5 character a 30pt marker drone? its completely useless his bs cant go higher.
anyway glad it saved him although the drone cant take all hits so i hope you spread them out correctly....... ???

rechar, the only problem I see is that the only army that could have hit him with all of that from one unit is maybe eldar fire dragons. other wise he would have took the shots one at a time from several units or over several turns. if that is the case, then what he did was perfectly legal.

I could be wrong about that though (he could have also been facing a space marine army that used the one trait that allows you to have two specials instead of a special and a heavy)

Fusion Guns - close enough, and you can have a ten-man squad all toting them.
