one of my friends tells me that if you shoot at stealthsuits and cant see them you get to choose another target even though it specifically says in the codex "if the stealth armour troopers are not within spotting range, the unit MAY NOT choose to fire at a different target. i was wondering if anyone could clear this up for me.

You're freind is incorrect, as you know. The Codex specificly says you can't. This isn't a leadership test, this is a nightfight test. I love stealth suits for that main reason.

You can choose to fire at other targets, according to Tau FAQ

It says , that enemy can ignore stealth suits when determining the closest unit.

Althought its also says , that rules for spotting stealth suits remains unchanged - so, I guess they cannot choose to fire at other units if they attempted to spot the stealth suits.

The rule is unchanged.... the FAQ just says that you don't have to consider them the closet unit for Leadership purpose. So if he decided to shoot at them and came up short he dose not get to pick another unit.

This thread has been solved and is now locked, what the codex says is correct as there is nothing in the FAQ against this.
