Default Tau Commander Equipment

Part of me thinks this should go in the Army List board and if it should I do apologize. Since this thread is to discuss a single model's equipment I thought it would be okay here.

I just bought the new Tau Commander and thought about how to outfit him.

I considered the following:

1 Tau Commander Shas'el 142 pts
Cyclic ion blaster
Fusion blaster
Drone controller
2x Shield Drones
Ejection System
Hard-wired multi-tracker
Hard-wired target lock
Stimulant injector

What do you think? I know it is hard to determine without a full list but how do you feel? I'd likely face mainly Marines and other power armor armies. I realize the weapons are relatively short/mid-range but they do provide me with sufficient AP to go past power armor. The Shield Drones should help provide defensive capabilities. I did wonder about only having 1 but if it goes them BAM! Ejection System is a neat ability and it'd give me cause for a special pilot model. The two hard-wired items would basically help the Commander fire everything he has while also shooting at whatever was most pressing. Stimulant injector seems like a no brainer too.

This is fine for the main forum. Army lists is for full lists. There have been a number of topics on the various new upgrades available to us, so I will just comment on your current loadout.

I am not sure about the combination of a Fusion Blaster and CIB. One is really only useful for anti-tank, and the other is only useful against infantry. If you want both for versatility, you might want to drop the multi-tracker. Remember, the target lock on battlesuits still does not allow you to split fire from the same model. With that in mind, I would drop the Target Lock as well.

By taking the drones, your commander becomes a unit, so he's suddenly targetable. I'm planning to instead just take a vehicle-deployed pair of drones near him, or stick him behind a squad... IC status seems to be excellent protection, even compared to the drones.

And whether he's alone or with SHIELD drones, you don't need a target-lock to target somtehing else... unless he's linked to a unit (where he'll once again become a viable target for wounding)

What I'd like to see are some 'heavy' choices for our crisis suits: nothing as heavy as a broadside [if each railgun is 1 hardpoint, that means they dropped the jetpack to have 5 points total...], but, say, a 48" rail rifle (you've got a jetpack and a big suit-assisted firing platform)... or some 'takes 2 hardpoint' weapons... just more options to specialise, really. That would be great; while everyone else's big HQ guy is either a psyker or a close-combat monstrosity (usually both), ours would instead be a sniper with a jetpack (so can still move 6" if firing... just, during the assault phase)!

Is he going to attatch to a squad or something? Cause otherwise he needs no target lock.

I would go with a shield gennerator over the shield drones. The drones make the commander a unit and therefore targetable. Without them the commander is an IC and as long as some other unit is between him and the enemy he cant be shot. Excelent way to keep him alive to bring powerful weaponry to bear. With a shas'el though I would consider a targeting array to up that BS and the stim injector is alright but that and the ejection system seem like putting a lot of extras on that probably wont be used.

For instance my Shas'O is equipped with a Fusion Blaster, Plasma Rifle and Shield Gennerator. With his IC status and the Shield genn coupled with his increased skills as a Shas'O he is capable of staying alive through quite a bit. Despite this however he has only been wounded once and that was when a death cult assasine took 2 wounds off in close combat before he stomped on her. Given those few wounds were from a power weapon the chances of the stim injector actually being usefull are slim. Its not like he is really in a position to get shot much or assaulted easily. Given that it also makes the likelyhood of the ejection system coming into use little aswell. Thats just my commander but used right any IC commander can have the same results really. And remember his weapons this guy gets close and still.

I would suggest something more along the lines of:

Shas'el
Cyclic Ion Blaster
Fusion Blaster
Targeting Array
Hard Wired Multi Tracker
Total: 102

Gets the job done and saves you 40 points. Thats 4 Firewarriors or a good few upgrades for any skimmers you have. Bonding or officer upgrades perhaps.

Thanks for the tips guys. My plan is to incorporate a full bodyguard with him. I haven't quite figured out how I want to equip the 2 bodyguards. Suggestions?

For the Commander, I posted some thoughts that a friend gave me, he plays power armor armies, and he saw the AP for the Fusion and thought it would play well against him. Originally I was inclined for a Missile Pod, I love those things, or a Plasma Rifle. I like the fluff behind the Ejection system but it really wouldn't be useful in the game for me.

When I make my list I'm hoping to fit in Vespids, Broadsides and Gun Drones (I know you want to knock these down).

I considered the following:

1 Tau Commander Shas'el 135 pts
Cyclic ion blaster
Plasma rifle
Drone controller
2x Shield Drones
Hard-wired multi-tracker
Hard-wired target lock
Stimulant injector

***Edited 4/14/06 2pm EST - Sorry, I put the wrong points cost for the revised equipment, I've fixed that now***

I like the Plasma Rifle a little better. It is not very good at anti-armour, but it cracks Space Marines very effectively at close range (where you will need to be to make use of the CIB) or at long range during your approach.
