Okay i was talkin to a friend of mine an he's gonna get back into 40k on the regular, an will be playing necrons, hes gonna be fielding something like 60 warriors, some destroyers, a lord with a destroyer body, and some wraiths, along with some scarabs...
Any ideas on how to take this out with tau..? thats a lotta models so phasing him out wont be easy, if possible...i dunno, this is like a 2000 pnt game....any ideas for what i should play or lists will help greatly...

Necrons aren't all what they're pumped up to be. I don't know what models you have, but I would go with a Mechanised Force with Tau. Pound away at his forces with your heavy support while the Mech Infantry move around and engage where needed. Send in the Fast Attack and use them as Tank Hunters/Elite Hunters. I really can't help though unless I have more info.

EDIT: Go to: http://www-personal.engin.umich.edu/...j/necrons.html That should help you alittle!

ION CANNON ACTIVATE! SUPREME NECRON KILLING POWER GO! >

Seriously tho, the ion cannan is your best friend against necrons. If used to to snipe a necron lord by moving to make sure he was my only target in LoS (therefore the closest, therefore targetable). 3 hits, 2s to wound and he was gone, poof!

Other things to keep in mind:

-Necrons CAN be pinned, and with a few MLs, you can pin those giant 20-strong necron warrior squads, as all it takes 1 pathfinder squad and maybesome sniper drones.

-Seeker missiles, plasma rifles, missile pods, and neuron guns are fantastic against necrons. TBH when fighting necrons a UCTT approach is usually the best bet (pathfinders, sniper drones, skyrays, CQB suits)

-Make sure you wipe out all destroyers in 1 turn, so they cant make their WBB roll (he has no tomb spyders, use that to your advantage) as one can only regenerate if a friendly model of the same type is present within 6 inches.

sniper drones and ionheads because they will ignore the precious armour save and wound on 2's.

if its true that you're battling only a crapload of warriors along with a very few specialist units, you should be fine as long as you just bring along speed and AP.

Having owned a necron army in the past, the main idea I can see swirling in your friends head is that his massive amounts of warriors will make phase out a painful task, as well as the fact that his lord (which will be carrying a rez orb, unless he's stupid) will help keep these troops intact until its too late...

Deny him of his resurrection Joe's by beating down on those units that are out of range of the orb (12 inch range I think, it's been a while) and lay the smackdown with sniper drones where ever you can... if he's fielding wraiths, smack them down with vespid or other high AP weapon wielding allys, because there harassing nature will put them miles away from the rez orb. (usually)

scarabs are moped up easily enough, a unit of fire warriors would only take a turn or two to route a few maxed out units...

amazingly i havent seen anyone say it yet but take some plasma rifloes on crisis suits. here is a good but expensive configuration for them.

TL plasma
targetting array
altogether that is about 65 points a suit that can kill 2 necron warriors a turn(potentially) and can jump back behind cover.
