Default Ethereals? Really that useful?

I'm looking at the new codex and pondering over the ethereal entry and wondering if it really is that usefull.

the only advantages i can see is being able to take a squad of +1 BS fire warriors or getting preferred enemy when he dies (with no save and rubbish toughness he certainly will)

considering preferred enemy only works in close combat 50 points is pretty expensive to hopefully get a useless ability for your army(if your in combat your in trouble)

so is that 50 points worth it for the honour guard or should the ethereals be left at home?

They ought to be used as objective markers. Thats all they are good for. So paint them well!

I might be swayed to take Aun'va for a test drive, just to watch so many opponents fire a wastefull amout of negery into his very good toughness and save! A plain ethereal however i'd ony really consider using in a fluffwise game more than anything.

Back in the old dex, they were amazing. Now they suck huge.

Never use one in games under 3000pts

they were useless still are. though bs 4 fire wariors does sound ggod. i might consider taking one for that and the fluffyness of it. plus against an inexpierienced player he could be a good distraction while the real threats come in for the kill

They were actually not too bad in the old codex, they could be used well, you just had to have the right tactics. However, the only reason I would buy one now is to paint it, (they just aren't as good, and they look fun).

Ethereals were/are anywhere NEAR useless!

The re-roll to Ld is incredibly invaluable, pass or fail!

It is your opponents combat phase, and a squad of assault marines wipes out 4, leaving your squad stuck in and your army not being able to shoot at what can and likely will wipe your army out.

However, your fire warriors feel brave enough to stick around for another combat phase.

Chances are that they'll be wiped out next turn and the assault squad will be free to move onto another squad.

Keeping an Ethereal in LoS isn't that hard if you can put terrain down realistically, so that re-roll to fail the Ld on the Firewarriors, even having them cut down, is for the greater good.

Also, they can keep that uber-expensive broadside team on the table, since he makes them fearless!!

Sure, you guys can complain about how useless and horrible and broken Ethereals are, especially considering it takes only a little bit more finesse to keep them doing their job.

Also, I'll still take an ethereal because I like them.

Cheers,
Lawrence.
