Default bonding

hello i read the tau book recently and was looking for some answers to questions. most were answered but i couldnt find this one.

do tau really lose thier bonding when the model with the knife dies? it says so in the book but we never really used it in our games here as we reasonesd that the tau were bonded by experience (like it says in the old book) and dont forget it when they lose thier ceremonial knife. newy i just wanted to confirm that officially when the model with the knife dies the whole group loses bonding? thx! ( still seems rather senseless to me if this is true and someone could explain the fluff side as to why that would also be good) thx!!

Bonding Knife - "So long as the bearer is alive, the bonded team may regroup if even if below half strength."

Well, if the book says it, it's hard to argue. Fortunately, since you can pick your casualties, its easy to keep the knife holder alive.

i never liked that (new codex) because if the team did the bonding ritual then it should jut have to be shown on A model but the whole squad would never lose it. you think if your buddies cut your stomach practically open you wouldnt run becasue you were bonded to them in that way. or why dooesnt someone pick up the bonding knife?

Honestly, is there any way for you to lose your Bonded Shas'Ui or Shas'Vre without either CC or a major positioning mistake on your part?
Bonding cost was cut in HALF. It's a fine tradeoff.

The bonding knife trade-off:
The bonding knife is now half as cheap as before, however, once the model that holds it dies the whole team loses the ability. The good thing about this is that the only way your opponent can specifically target your shas'ui/shas'vre, is to be in close combat with him, and only him, or you had mistakenly placed your squad leader in Line Of Sight, while the rest of your squad is behind cover, or out of sight, (obeying unit coherency, that is).

There's a couple more way the bearer of the bonding knife (BotBK*) could die. However they're rather esoteric examples, not the norm.

1 - Vindicaire assassin. They choose who eats their sniper bullet.

2 - Farseer w/ mind war. Again they choose who's mind they shred, if they can see the BotBK then he's fair game.

*I'm aware that the acronym I've just used is unwieldy and pointless, however I found it amusing and therefore have subjected the rest of you to it. HA!

If either of those two units choose to have the BotBK die, then you're up S*** creek without the freaking boat! Those units have way better targets to choose from.

Don't forget torrent of fire. Few units can cause enough wounds from shooting on a FW squad, but there are some. Especially if the squad is depleted.

The Bonding Knife price was not actually cut in half. Prior to the new codex you could bond a team without a team leader. Now, in the case of a FW team for example, you must upgrade one member to a Shas'ui team leader to be able to purchase the knife as wargear. So, it actually costs more to have a bonded FW team now. Before the cost of bonding was 10pts, now you have to effectively pay 15pts to get a bonded team. You do get the bonus of having the Shas'ui, I guess, if that's worth it to you.
