Default My 'Vre Broadside

I bet that lured some "Psh!" remarks out of some of you, but here goes:

After tinkering around with various Broadside setups (monat for a small point game, 3 man monty haul setups, paired standard pick, etc) on paper for a while, I noticed there was always one common recurring element: a tricked out Plasma Broadside. This setup, now elevated to being called a guy... this guy kept appearing in all of the different role arrangements, under nearly all possible conditions, and this focused me on him more and more. I was determined to build this guy, permanently tricked out, and 'special' now, because he certainly stood out as special on paper so far. He was now practically a Character, a soon to be a Named army fluff Hero.

Now, his Specs:
Broadside (duh)
Upgrade to Shas'Vre (figured he was owed the veteran status purely for fluff reasons- I'm willing to eat the 5 points.. big deal!)
Upgrade to Plasma Rifles
Targeting Array Support Hardpoint (the beginning of the tricked out-ness)
HW Multitracker
HW Targetlock (to keep him unmodified under any game setup.. 5 more points eaten)
HW Drone Controller
Shield Drone
Marker Drone
---------------
155 points.

Sure, its over the price of 2 full broadsides... but this is more about character. The Drones can be dropped, effectively making him a 110 point model, but I like the mixed drone setup, with a markerlight of his very own, and an invulnerable pet Shield Drone loyally at his heel. See? Character.

To make him special in the modelling aspect, I went the simple and cheap way (no Broadside 88-2's.. not yet!), and went with an arm mounted Rail Rifle mod. Another way to express character was to mount the Multi and TL on the shoulders even though theyre HardWired (no reason they cant be hardwired to the suits shoulders....). Having full guns, and both shoulders filled, AND drones hovering nearby certainly says 'Special'. I may later have the Shield Drone mounted on-Base (obediently at the heel, of course!), and the Marker Drone hovering behind over his head. The Plasma Rifles... well, I guess a pic is worth a thousand words:

[coming soon!]

[/end tease]

I weighed the possibilites of taking A.S.S. over the Targetting array, but unless I hear any convincing arguments, I'm sticking with what is. What do you guys think? Is this a total waste of effort and brainpower? Or something we all wished we saw more of??

Very cool. Broadside seems like a difficult model to give character to because it has so much...stuff. A couple things you might want to think about:

ASS might be worth the slot instead of the targeting array. After all, you already have everything twin-linked, and your own markerlight. Your markerlight may find itself wasted if you're not firing into cover or night fighting.

In addition, if you don't take the ASS, that means you're going to have to put yourself out in the open the round before you shoot—meaning that if you don't get the first turn, all of your points might be wasted. ASS will allow you to hide behind, for example, a wood, and then walk into it and fire on your first turn. As a counterpoint, your Broadside can still fire his plasma rifles...it's a tough choice.

Forget the target lock—this guy shouldn't be fielded with anyone else. If you still want to trick him out, give him a blacksun filter, it will be equally as useful, but is 2 points cheaper.

Another way I was planning on making hime special was when it came time to apply decals... something I havent done before, but will with this guy:

I'm going to apply 4 bonding knifes on his left chest plate, 3 of them broken (as simple as tearing the decal just right...), one whole. This signifies that he's a grizzled veteran, having bonded and lost all compatriots several times, yet still standing.

This qualifies as a very god point, But I'm still sticking with the Targetting Array, for several reasons:
1) He may act alone in 500 point games, leader of a pair in 1500 point games, and leader of a trio in 2000 point games. Now if I take A.S.S., then everyone has to take it, and that may ruin some versatility (as I usually get a TL or drone controller on the no-upgrade 'Ui's)
2)Part of being 'special' is how he never, ever misses. 66% accuracy rerolled is pretty special, dontcha think? And his reliability is something I can brag about mid-game, and use to my advantage psychologically, and tactically. (too bad I cant give him Tank Hunter....)
3)I may eventually build an O'Shovah Suit Army, and one approach I'll have is the broadside, stealth team, and every single 'Vre Crisis in the bodyguard, and other Crisis leaders as well, will have Targeting arrays, to elevate the army as a whole to a BS4 army.. yet with Tau weapons... And this guy definately wants to be along for that army list (like hes one of the few surviving Broadside pilots, fully representing the 0-1 limitation) >

I've been reconsidering the Marker Drone, and wishing I could get an exception and be able to take Special Issue Wargear (only!), so I could get Stim Injectors and an Ejection Seat, just to fully flesh out his character. The TL stays (for when hes part of an SMS trio or pair, and would like to AP2 something without distracting the others' duties..)

Modelling Tips Desired: How best to represent a Targetting array? I'm thinking of trimming off the bottom 2/3 of a TL pod and mounting the top big lens and hood square on top of the head. A blacksun filter Ive thought about, simply because the kewl mod I dreamt up: getting a gold film (transparent/reflective/metallic.. like a school folder transparency divider of the right color), and fitting it on the head in front of the helmet optics.. simple, giving him some bling bling ( :P ) shades, and easy to do! thats all for now, and I promise Pic will be up soon!

TL plasma - Why? With A.S.S. he can move, and why fire a plasma 1 shot when you can fire a rail 1 shot? Let them get within 12" and he'll probably be in combat - generally where you don't want them. SMS has more shots against pesky infantry and the like, plus no LOS for 10pts cheaper!

With a targeting array of BS 4, why give him a 30pts marker drones when all his stuff is twin linked as it is....

I do love the forgeworld braodsides, and they're the only ones that will make an appearance in my army. I'd say give your monat hunter 2 shield drones, more durability when hes out there on his own! Target lock useless, but blacksun filter better idea.

Modelling: Perhaps convert the 2 pieces attached to the marker drone bits a little, as they seems quite lockish like - which is what a markerlight is after all!

It's for [b]FLUFF[b] reasons. not gaming ones. Fluff should over ride every argument in a case like this. It's not whether he'll use this or not but the fact that he has it. It is a more sentimental idea than playing only to win.

For TA try an extended scope on the main eye. Like a little bit of something that goes out then have a tube on it making it like a telescope.
