Default Do shield drones ALWAYS take the hit?

I had a 3 man crisis team behind a forest template. the team was equipped with two shield drones. The only thing visible to a marine plasma gun was a crisis who had poked too far out from the terrain. He got shot at by the plasma and i tried to put the invo save on the shield drone.

So heres the question:

Do shield drones always take the hits because they "swoop in front of incoming fire" (so says the fluff), or is it true that the crisis should have gotten shot and not the drone?

The Sheild drone takes any hit you want it to, so long as its still alive. With the Majority Toughness and Save ruels, now the Drones count as having the same Armor and Toughness as the unit that takes them. So you can allocate hits wherever you want.

If the Crisis suit was the only model in LOS to the firing unit, then yes it must take the hit. To assign a hit to a model, it must be in range & LOS of the unit firing at it. Fluff, unfortunately, isn't rules.

The crisis suit takes the hit. The majority toughness and armor rules no longer apply, but all normal targetting restrictions still do. There is nothing that says otherwise in the shield drone rules.

Correct. This also means that Battlesuits can be "range-sniped" if they are in front of the drones. So basically, using the drones to shield the battlesuits is now partly a manual decision instead of a purely automatic one.

Also if you shoot a lascannon at the squad and the drones are in the minority they dont take the hit. Their 4+ invul save will not be the majority in that case.

The drones have to be a viable target. Their close protection rule now just makes it so you can decide whether or not you want the drone to take the hit, IF it is elligible to.

Shield drones now mimic their owning models toughness and armor save, so that they may take the hit instead of the rest of the unit. This is especially usefull if you give a bodyguard the iridium armor, then 2 shield drones, making a unit of 4, 3 with 2+ saves, and 2 with +4 invunerable saves. Makes it nice and handy to have. But yes, LOS, Majority Toughness and Armor Rules, and weapon range checks are still required before wounds are assigned.

So in the above example, because your drones were not in LoS, thet would not have the option to take the hits. Lesson learned? ALWAYS keep your drones in front!

I think the point is that even though your armour save is ignored by high AP-weapons, it is still used when determining majority armour rules. It is hard to say. Would a Black Templar player get to remove a Neophyte first if hit by a lascannon? I am not sure how the rules should be interpreted in this case.

You still need to assign wounds based on majority armor rules. THe AP comes into play after you assign the wounds, when you get to make the saves. In the case of a lascannon, you would assign wounds per majority armor and toughness rules, but would just not be able to make any save. Take note, that this is for base armor only, Invunerability saves are figured later, unless it is part of the base profile.
