Default The problem with pinning...I think?

Hi guys!

I was having a chat with a tyranid player at my local gaming club, and I was bragging about the awesome "Tau pinning army" we have been hearing so much about. (Snipers, carbines and markerlights)

Anyway...he kind of took the air out of me by claiming that both tyranids and marines have some kind of special rule that makes them immune to pinning. Is this correct?

Cheers

Synapse for nids. Makes some impossible to pin.

For marines, they are difficult to pin, but not impossible.

Dunno about 'nids but marines aren't immune especially with markerlights on your side..

Ok...synapse is it? Does this apply to the synapse creatures only, or the enite swarm?

Anything within 12" of a synapse creature.

Your best bet is to sipmly annihilate the synapse creatures first then pin the little bugs and vape them at your leisure.

Yep, Nids are a Tau's worst nightmare.

They are immune to Pinning and never fallback while within 12" of a synapse creature. On top of that you can't insta kill any Nids either.

They are fast and nasty in CC and they can get into CC usually by Turn 2.

You'd better have a lot of Kroot around when facing Nids....

I have yet to face a Nid army where I couldn't quickly wipe out most of the synapse creatures... then again, I haven't played many nid armies.

once you get rid of the synapse creatures, they will have to take pinning tests using LD5...... >

Nids are all but immune to pinning. They will always be in synapse with RARE exception. In addition, they have such a variety of units with 2 wounds and 2+ saves that it is cost prohibitive to fire railguns at them, so you'll need Plasma and Fusion blasters to hurt them, and to concentrate fire to kill them. Against Nids, the fight is mostly about assessing what is the greatest threat to you and killing that first, and moving down your threat priority checklist.

Marines are all but immune to pinning, but most are pinnable (no Black Templar will be, since the only vow they have that's worth taking against Tau is the one that allows them to never be pinned).

Anything Fearless is immune to pinning (which is how Chaos and so many types of Marine units will avoid it). On top of it all, it strikes me that MOST leadership in the game is Ld9 or 10, and I don't rely on making anything fail a pin test unless I can force it to take the test against Ld6 or lower.
