Default The Tau tank names, why?

i really love the tau style of naming their tanks

but, are it fluffy? i mean,do tau know all the names of fishes on earth at our time? does even piranhas or hammerheads(sharks) exist in 40k?

thoughts?

All Codices are written from an Imperial perspective.

For example, Tyranids do not call a Genestealer "Genestealer"... they don't call it anything! They know what it is, what it does, and what it's there for. They don't need to name it.

Likewise, The Eldar do not have "Falcons", they have "Falchu". I suppose that Falcon is an acceptable translation, in the same way that Lord of The Rings is "a book".

The Tau unit desginated Xar'Vesa 8 is usually used in a rapid-responce role, counterattacking wherever support is needed... in effect, it responds to a "crisis", thus the Imperials called them Crisis Suits.

Likewise, Devilfish, Hammerhead, Skyray, etc. are all Imperial names for Tau units.

I cooked up some Tau names for vehicles for the Epic list - they should be in one of the forthcoming updates (since it seems the new 'dex hasn't invalidated them)

I believe the reason that Tau vehicles are named after fish, is because the way they glide across fields, in the eyes of imperial soldiers looks very much like the swift swimming style of sea life.

Oh, and there are fish in the 40k universe (or there were). Its based on our universe, just some 38,000 years later

Hope this helps

Names for almost everything in the 40k universe are Imperial codenames. The Hammerhead codename is from the shape of the Tau tank, similar to the ancinet Hammerhead sharks on ancient Terra. It is also likely that alien life-forms were names after similar Earth creatures, since on the other side of the galaxy you woun't need to differentiate between the two.

Hmm...Does that apply to all races and vehicles? Why did they name Kroot "Kroot"?

No, Kroot are Kroot because they call themselves Kroot.

Warspheres, however, are likely a Human or Tau term.

why name a tank a fish we've never ever heard about. that'd be frustrating and meaningless and gamesworkshop would be ashamed.

If you've never heard of a Devilfish (let alone a Hammerhead) in RL, you ought to get out more...
