Default Decoy Launchers and Piranha squadrons

I'd just like to enlighten everyone to something that occured to me the other day while making a list.

In this list I took a pirhana squadron, and out of habit imediatley gave them Decoy Launchers, just like I do with every other Xenos scum vechicle.

Now the list wound up going over points so I had to remove something and eventually settled on taking off the Decoy launchers. This got me thinking, are decoy launchers really worth it for a pirhana squad?

The decoy launcher forces an opponent to re-roll "imbolized" reults on the glancing hit chart, which is great for fast moving skimmers like hammer heads and devilfish. It means that your oponnent must roll 5+ on his second roll to destroy your skimmer.

The pirhana however is open topped meaning that if your opponent rolls a 4 on the glancing hit table he must re roll. Now if that dice he re-rolls comes up with a 2+ he's effectivley rendered your pirhan dead or useless.

On a roll of 2 (3) he's stunned the pirhana, meaning it cannot move or shoot next turn. If its in a squad you'll be forced to either stay still or fly off thereby destroying the stunned pirhana.

On a roll of 3(4) he's taken the weapon off your pirhana, and since it only has one weapon you now have a skimmer that can't acopmlish much but act as a drone carrier.

On a roll of 4(5) + The skimmer is dead.

In short if you have a squadron of pirhanas by buying them decoy launchers they will only be useful 1/36 times. Those odds aren't great.

Pesonally speaking I'll be saving those points for some thing else.

Hrm, I hadn't thought of that. If we count weapon destroyed and stunned results as "destroyed"..

Chance of glancing hit "destroying" pirannha in a squadron without DL: 5/6, 83%

Chance for "destroying" it WITH DL: If I'm calculating right, it's 81% - it will be saved in 2/11 scenarios. I'm probably calculating wrong though.

Even so, intuitively it seems to be not worth it. Good find - pirannhas just got cheaper! Although, less durable. =p

Pirannhas are expendable to me (just like almost every part of my army! :P). So, having it survive about 2% more with DL isn't going to work for me.

the stunned result only counts as destroyed if the model is not a lone. or the team hasnt got disruption pods.

it os questionable if decoy launvhes are worth it i think the maths needs to worked out

also a vehical with out a wepoan is still a scoring vehcail so you shouldent discredit that.

also you may have seekers or drones when you hit so you 3 to 5 wepoan systems to loss

It's all certainly food for thought. Keep it coming and can we have some more stats with other gear on the Parahna.
