OK, first a disclaimer, I'm really trying not to rules lawyer every little nit picking thing, but since I've gottan the Codex, my falling asleep ritual every night has been 'think about Tau and the new codex, and the new changes and possibilites'... untill I fall asleep. Its like freeform thinking, but apparently for me theres a catch: My freeform thinking mind becomes an evil rules lawyer that could and would logic-paint you into a corner with 100% backed up logic. Shame on me! But anyways, some neat little things pop up halfway to dreamland. Heres one:

Drones on a vehicle count as and are treated as passengers. So, why dont they forcibly have to disembark after the vehicle in question takes a penetrating hit?? Is this a basic rule that we've all been ignoring (or is it just one I've been missing?)? Take it one further, if the vehicle is destroyed, and the Firewarriros bail out and start making their saves.... have we been doing that with the drones onboard as well? A pair of drones is pretty usefull (especially now that the Ld 4 crippling gimmick thing is out the window), and apparently theres no reason to let them crash and burn with the rest of the vehicle!

I've always disembarked drones for penetrating hits... just seems like a backwards extension of the vehicle destruction rules.

I think you are absolutely correct. I think they would have to disembark if the vehicle took a penetrating hit. As MechTau noted, it doesn't really come up very often. It also makes some sense given how drones work, as a hard enough hit could dislodge them from their cradles.

They have to disembark, just like any other unit.. they were never an exception - that is how I've played in about the.. two times I've had a DF destroyed (ok, it was more like four, but I haven't played that much lately).

This brings up an intersting question: if the drones are alive, does the enemy get VPs for the destroyed DF?

As far as I know. I can't see any reason they shouldn't. Otherwise, there would be nothing stopping you from disembarking all of them and hiding them in a corner.

The drones would be treated as passengers, not part of the vehicle (though they do come with it). So when the vehicle is destroyed - the vehicle is destroyed. The drones are just passengers and aren't part of the vehicle when considering VPs.
