Default HQ choice

hey

im planning my tau army and was thinking which HQ choice to get. what are the advantages/disadvantages that come with choosing on over the other. also which do you guys use.

I used to take an ethereal. But with the new rules, I am stocking to Command XV-8

You have to take a Commander anyway so it just depends whether you want another commander or an Ethereal. I will take the Commander and an Ethereal.

Is that a Tau Empires thing? In the old Codex, you never had to take a Commander...

Commanders are a powerful shooting force - with special wargear and superb BS, they are made all the more powerful by the fact that they are untargettable without bodyguards.
Downside: Price tag for a tooled-out model.

Etherials are a great way to boost Leadership, and also let you pull some nice tricks to get out of combat or survive under fire when things go wrong.
Downside: Don't let them get killed!

Commanders are now 1+ in Tau Empires.

I always take a commander, basically because I prefer ranged weapons over the special rules that the ethereal gives. Under the new rules, the Commander is more versatile through the options available, and the Ethereal is toned down a bit, though it does have an interesting extra rule.

It used to be always a good idea to take an ethereal in 500 points. Especially with 3 squads of Firewarriors and a broadside. (Under the TAR rules, it was always wise to take as much FW as you can) With rerollable leadership checks, it would be hard for any of your firewarriors to break.
