Default Sneaky tactics to ruin Stealthsuits.

I have a uber sneaky friend (ork player, naturally) who's decided he's found a was to undermine the advantage that steath suit have.

Beacuse the stealth suits use night-fight rules to be seen, theoretically a simple 1 point upgrade can destroy that! His theory is that if a vehicle has a spotlight, and zooms up to the stealth suits, searchlight's them (and manages to see them of course), EVERYONE can them see them, as per search light rules.

Personally, I think this is a bit too suspicious and fluff wise doesn't make sense. He then reminded me that fluff goes out the window in the name of keeping the rules simple.

I think all tau players will say this is rubbish but all non-tau players will love and embrace it....

Searchlights may only be used in missions where the Night Fighting scenario special rule is in effect. Have your friend read his codex more carefully. This is how the rules for the searchlight are worded in Daemonhunters (p. 19), Witch Hunters (p. 23), and Codex: Space Marines (p. 25). Searchlights will not have any special effect on Stealthsuits, Grey Knights, Assassins, or any other unit with similar "reduced visibility" rules in a normal game. In a game where Night Fighting is used, a Searchlight still will not negate Stealth rules completely. All it will do (in the case of the Stealthsuit) is allow units to ignore the normal half distance penalty for shooting at Stealthsuits at night (this is mentioned in the Tau FAQ on the GW website). Using the latest rules from Codex: Space Marines, the vehicle also has to successfully target the Stealthsuits in order to illuminate them (so within about ~15")

Hope that clears it up.

This has changed: the new codex states that models with stealth fields gain no additional protection when fighting at night IIRC.

IMHO your opponent should at least have to take a night test before taking a stealth test (and making sure that they can see at night AS WELL AS see the moving air), so 2 tests instead of 1 test then divide distance by 2.

Let's keep it to the actual rules to avoid confusion. If the new codex is removing the double effect, that is all to the good for the sake of simplicity. In that case, Stealth rules, Shrouding, and their ilk are simply never effected by searchlights.
