Default CIB underpriced?

The Cylinic Ion Blaster (CIB) to me is considered an amazing weapon. Though it may have the strength of an angry flashlight (read "las-pistol" in Dawn of war handbook). It has an AP of a Heavy Bolter and has 1 more shot than an Assault Cannon (2 more shots if you use the 3 ed. rulebook). All for the price of a TL Burst cannon. Isn't the CIB a bit cheap for it's power?

While it kills infantry good, it kills marines poorly. Sure, you could get an AP1 shot onto them, but wounding on a 5+ is not good. If it was S4, it would be underpriced. But since it is only S3, I think it is a good price.

It's a useful gun, but it's not amazing.

If you were using 3rd Edition rules, you'd need to use the 3rd edition Tau Codex too....

Plus, it's "Cyclical". As in "cycles".

I just have an image of Rambo standing out in the desert and single-handedly defeating an entire army with this...or on Hot Shots 2 on the boat, almost sinking himself with ammo casings. This is just a highly advanced Ork gun and I, for one, consider it MANDATORY on my Commander for bling factor alone

Meh, not strong enough to pierce marines and S3... That means no, it cant possibly be underpriced.

It's better than a fusion blaster weight in at 25/27 meaning its also better than a plasma at range. so how you worked that it kills marines poorly?

i think the deal is that you can only have 1 in a army so it under price and secondly because it under priced it sells lots of commander box.

though it does have a majour difficult when compared to other tau wepaons it can hurt above S6, it cant pop tank.

I agree with this last part. I have no problem with str 3 fo rkilling marines, but it can't double as a ligh tank killer :'(

Are we talking about the cost of new or old twin burst cannons? The standard terminology is to state its cost in marines. This thing costs one marine? If so:

MEQ kills per turn per point (bs3 crisis)-

At 18"
Plasma - .0208
Twin Plasma - .0208
CIB - .037
CIB against Terminator - .0324

At 12"
Plasma - .0416
Twin Plasma - .0416
CIB - .037
CIB against Terminator - .0324
Fusion - .0347
Twin Fusion - .0347

MEQ kills per turn per point (bs4 crisis)-

At 18"
Plasma - .0277
Twin Plasma - .02469
CIB - .04938
CIB against Terminator - .0432

At 12"
Plasma - .05
Twin Plasma - .04938
CIB - .04938
CIB against Terminator - .0432
Fusion - .046
Twin Fusion - .0411

MEQ kills per turn per point (bs5 crisis)-

At 18"
Plasma - .0347
Twin Plasma - .027
CIB - .0617 (!)
CIB against Terminator - .054

At 12"
Plasma - .0694
Twin Plasma - .0540
CIB - .0617
CIB against Terminator - .054
Fusion - .05787
Twin Fusion - .0450

Whew, time to give the calculator a rest. Things I've learned -

- Twinlinking plasma (or anything) is inefficient. You are getting diminishing returns for assurance that your suit will do its job. At that rate of loss, it might be more worthwhile to get another crisis! Depending of course on how much of whatever weapon you want to field.

- The CIB is a fantastic weapon on a Shas'O.

- Plasma STILL packs more punch than a CIB. It might be equally efficient, even less so in some cases, but you can get more points of it onto any single crisis suit.

Still, the CIB is a good weapon overall. The notable drawbacks are its 6" less range and inability to dent vehicles of any kind. An advantage is the possibility that it can kill 5 terminators in one turn!

The question is - questions, rather - Do you have a Shas'O to spare? Do you want to devote a crisis suit to hunting infantry? Personally I never have trouble with vehicles. The big question for me is whether I should upgrade to Shas'O for this gun or not...

I think you messed up on the plasma percentages as you seem to misplaced the decimal.

Nearly all of my Crisis Suits are anti-infantry, except for one Deathrain suit. So I guess I might exchange that Helios for a CIB and Missile Pod or Plasma Rifle. And the fact that it is one per army and you cannot bulk up on them is why it is not underpriced.

And by the way. I asked some marine players about the CIB and they said it sucks all because of S3. Even with AP4, possible AP1, high ROF, and low point value, they think it sucks. So a Shas'O with one may just look less appealing for that Missile Launcher guy to shoot. So you could use it as a psychological evader. I'd rather have that Missile Launcher hit my Broadside anyway.
