Default The Point of Pulse Pistols Being??

In the new WD (Britain) weapon stats on page 25 list a weapon called a pulse pistol - being a pistol and having less than half the range of a pulse rifle and the same AP+S. What??? ??? ???

The only real advantage of a pistol as opposed to the pulse rifle (that i see) is that it can fire once and then charge/assault, but as Tau were never really intended for cc, there is absolutely no point in this weapon.

I am relativley new to wargaming in genral so if I have missed the point of this entirely (exceedingly possible) please correct me.

The pulse pistol is a sidearm, only used by the sniper dron controller and the escape hatch using commander, as far as im aware.

It would be good for Farsight Enclaves. I think they should have had the option to swap their Pulse Rifles with Pulse Pistols and Close Combat Weapons so that, against Orks, they would be good in close combat. Otherwise, it is used to simulate a small firearm that is usually only used when you have enemies about to murder you.

There was already a thread asking this. Answer: It makes logical sence. A battlesuit pilot or Sniper Drone spotter would have trouble finding room for a Rifle or Carbine to use as a last-ditch defense, so the Pistol is just there as a fluffy backup.

To give a suitably Guardish quote:

"In battle, there are two kinds of people without a sidearm; idiots, and dead idiots."

There are plenty of situations where a pistol is much more valuable than a Rifle. When storming buildings, for example, or if your main gun is lost, broken and/or rendered inoperable.

So do you get to use an escaped commander as a firewarior, or did GW just put that in for show?

Yes, you get to use it.

I really like it. Gamingwise, better than nothing, fluffwise it is awesome.

The point, as has been said, is fluff.

I don't believe that modern pilots carry assault rifles or machine guns in the cockpits, but I think that they have a pistol incase they have to bail out.

none if you ask me. the carbine is better in anyway unles your planing to be in combat for a prolongled time, which tau wont. a spotter can easily carry a carbine around, and im sure creating space for a carbine in a crisis suit should be no problem. but pistols means that the person will be useless, which is the whole point. can't ahve a crisis suits blowing up and the guy actaully doing something after than, you need him running for cover.

Consider the size of a Crisis suit. Now consider this: accounting for the pilot, the MIU, power systems, jetpack systems, sensors, motors, ammunition, and other machinery... still think there's space for a weapon around 1.5 metres in length?
