Default Is it just me?

Is it just me, or am I the only one who finds it mind-numbingly boring to play against armies like Daemonhunters?

I realize they're not really overpowered or anything, but their excess of rules annoys me. I'll be about to try some tactic that works well enough against nearly everyone else, and then realize that won't work because of such-and-such a special rule. Then I'll realize that I'm attacking a Troops choice.

For heaven's sakes, why do Tau seem follow the rules so rigidly? Almost every other army (that I can think of off the top of my head) has some universal special rule that allows them to blatantly ignore the rules. You know, the sort that other armies seem to have in excess? Like Shrouding, WBB, And They Shall Know No Fear, etc. Tau have almost no such special rules.

I thought special rules were supposed to be for special units and options, not entire armies! ???

What do you think?

It adds individualism to each army, and because each army is special in a unique way, it prevents any one winning tactic from blowing away every army.

Daemonhunters are an extreme example; and I do find their excess of special rules both frustrating and unecessary. But with most all other armies, it's not really that big of a deal, and it's well balanced. The tau are just regular troops; nothing really special about them, except for, well, their basic weaponry is far and above any other army's.

You've just pointed out something I like about the tau. What makes them special is almost purely in stat lines. Nice simple stat changes. Theres very little of this "ignore this rule, add +1 to that rule" stuff, just basic "I have a stronger gun" stuff. Almost fantasy-ish really.

No cool special rules? A battlesuit breaks nearly all the rules in the shooting stage! Move and fire rapid-fire at full range. Shoot 2 weapons. Shoot at a different unit to the rest of the unit. Add T upgrade to insta-kill S.

I loves me my XV8's!

Deamon Hunter: I make demons take stability tests!
Broadside: That's interesting
Deamon Hunter: I get aegis armour!
Broadside: That's interesting
Deamon Hunter: I get......... (air hisses and burns)
Broadside: I GET RAILGUNS!

Tau have Strength 5 basic weapons and the best (for cost) anti - tank weapon in the game. Adding too many special rules would make them absolutley godlike.

That said, they have markerlights, they have a plethora of rules for Kroot, they have Price of Faliure and Inspiring Presence rules. That's enough for a non - mystic shooty army. And has Tyrehire said, they have jump - shoot - jump. That's enough for anyone.

As for Deamon Hunters, they are elites versions of Space Marines. Which are in turn elite versions of humans. They are some of the strongest warriors in the Imperium. If you didn't give them tons of special rules you would have to give them straight 7's to fit in with the fluff.

That's not really "special" rules. That's mostly tech upgrades that allow Tau to be the mobile firepower they deserve to be. Tau don't have any magic powers or special abilities or anything like that. Which, as Fish Ead said, is the cool thing about the Tau.
