Default Starting up Tau- Neccessary stuff?

So, im starting up Tau when the new Codex comes out. From what ive heard, its not going to be any *major* changes, many stat lines arent being changed too much.

So, im curious, what should I be buying? Obviously, a pack of fire warriors and a crisis/commander suit are needed. That would be what I would need to start a minimum 500 point army. (Meep. 60$...)

Other than that, however, what should I be buying? Im not going to waste money on stuff Ill never use like I did with 'Nids (Biovores... Yeah, you get the picture.).

Help out one of the many newbie Tau'lings?

id say that if you can stretch for it, get the boxed set for Tau, as this gives you, a squad of kroot, a squad of FW's, some drones and 3 XV8 Crisis suits. This will give you a nice 500pt ish setup. to build from.. after that its fairly much up to you!!!

I think a commander and 12 firewarriors would run you about 250 points o.o

really it depends on what you like to do. If you want to sit back and lob firepower down range, broadsides are nice to look at.

If you want to be mobile across the board(check the mech tau faqs), Devilfish and hammerheads are good.

In most armies, you'll have Stealth or crisis suits for elites.

Kroot and the new stingwings are touchy subjects. Stingwings are yet to be fully tested(other than people playing the numbers game). They may be pretty usefull as a shock troop, I'm thinking about keeping them back and in hiding, and then sweeping in to kill off a strong unit, or have them in reserve for after when the Chaplin and his Jetpacking retinue drop in, and I need to atleast weaken them.

Kroot are..well...as I said its a touchy subject. Some people love them to pieces, others think they're a waste of points.

My experiences have been this: I've used them 4 times, and only once they've really helped. Hang on, scratch that, 5 times, and twice. The first time they were usefull because they made a demon take wounds frim its demon weapon..Choked their rivers with our dead!

The second time, I infiltrated them to a forest upfront, and the enemy spent 2 turns shooting at them.

I'd personally grab an old battleforce (the one that is out right now).

Comes with 10 drones, a squad of kroot, firewarriors and 3 lovely crisis battlesuits

That's going to be put you well above 500!

At 90 bux, that isn't a bad deal at all - so go for it 8)

Why not the new box? It has soem armour to destract the opponent even if its only a devilfish. You get stealth suits which would help in a nightfight or to sneak up on the opponent. Why is the new one not as good as the old one?

The new one is more expensive I believe.

Comes with stealths and vespids though, so perhaps that would be a good choice.

The Sky Ray also sounds very appealing to me. Now then, how to put together 105$... Meep.

if you have the cash id go for the new boxed set because of the ethereal thats Limited Edition and all the prety units. and then it depends on your normal opponents.

I belive ive got the same normal opponents as everybody else-

Space Marines. Or slight variations of space marines. Like melee-marines or "Ha ha im massing lascannons" marines.
