Default Unit sizes of some units ( whats most used )

Hi there,
I never played tau, and before im making an army list im reading myself in Tau Tactics.
One question has occured to me.
What are some good sizes for units
I know firewarriors are best in 10.
Stealths in 4

The ones I want to know are Crisis Suits ( total in army, for 1k and 2k games )
Broadsides, same as above.
And gun Drones.
Kroot are best in groups of 12 or so I tought.

Greetings
Cyber

I thought that Crisis were best in groups of 2, as the loss of one suit will never put a 2-suit Team below 50%. Bonding is useless for them also, so there's points saved there.
However, this doesn't allow for taking any Drones, which may be more beneficial once the new codex hits.

I would imagine Broadsides would be similiar, though they will want Shield Drones and possibly Bonding to keep those important Railguns around. I would guess 2 'Sides with 2 Shield Drones each for durability.

Gun Drones, I'm guessing 6 or 8.

I typically field suits as units of 2 and 2 drones. That way I can still do a limited version of the "ablative wound" gun drone thing. Yeah the majoity toughness rules give me trouble, but I was always cautious with my suits anyway

For Fire Warriors, I'd say 12 since that's what fits in a Devilfish...duh. If I was fielding a static army, I'd still field them in massive units of 12 and as many as I could take, I would. To field them as small and annoying static units, take them in 6-8 squads...though this is a dangerous step towards min/maxing.

For Kroot, I'd say stay small (10-strong) or go large (16- like in a box, making one a Shaper). For larger units, throw in some Kroot Hounds and mayhap an Krootox.

Crisis Suits...well, your Commander should always be on his own for the Independant Character rule. If you MUST stick him in a unit, then do so afterwards. Individual suits you should have split up depending on your Elites choices remaining and that alone. If you're taking 3 Suits and no Stealths, take them in units of one. If you're taking 4, take them in units of 2...each one specialised for one roll. For 5-6, take them in whatever group you specialise into. Split them up as much as possible to negate their Under 50% squad size (and thus not be scoring and have a negative Leadership modifier).

Broadsides I would suggest 2 is the best number, again depending on your Heavy Support options. The more free, the smaller the units.

Drones...well...I really don't like them so I wouldn't know the first thing. I'd guess in a large unit so they can secure objectives later in the game if they don't get themselves killed :P

Thanks for the help
Yea I knew about the commander and good thinking about keeping them over the 50% danger zone.

This helps a lot thank you

Keep in mind that you also need to fear "All on your own" tests when you field two-suit units.

I find 2 is the best, makes bonding unnecessary, and the unit is either scoring, or dead, they're easy to hide, and not too expensive. Good point about on your own tests Khanaris. Though in my experience there are generally two, or they're dead. Two appears a lot less threatening than 3 as well. But then...so does 1.

I've always found stealths best in units of 6, as one casualty doesn't force a leadership test. More firepower also helps.

Broadsides are the same as crisis to me, units of 2.

Firewarriors are good at various unit sizes. 12 makes for decently survivable units. But I've also tried units of 8 to give me more control during deployment and more targets for my opponent. It really depends on your battle plan.

Drones --always max size (at least under current rules).

I have FW units of 6 and 12 and a squad of 10 thrown in there somewhere... crisis suits come in squads of two, except for Stealths. And a squad of 8 gundrones... my list is tuned to my personal tactics though... so it probably won't help you all that much.
