Default Are Markerlights, really Markerlights?

Markerlights are one of the most important elements in a Tau army. In the new rules, the can up BS, and down LD and negate cover saves/nightfighting rules.

However, should markerlights really be heavy weapons? I'm under the impression that markerlights are just laser pionts mounted on pulse carbines.

They may only look like little lasers, but i'm assuming that anything that conveys such an advantage must be classed as a heavy weapon because of the time it would require for the operator to select and carefully aim the 'light in the first place.

Basically, its not a heavy weapon because its heavy, but because of the time it takes to operate successfully.

They send a man out into the open and see if he gets shot. They thought that one up at West Point.

Yea lasering a target at 500m-2km range and calling in seeker missiles takes a steady hand and a turn spent not moving. If they tried to do it on the move, that laser would be bouncing al over the place (1" movement in wrist would mean seeker missile would be like 50 yards off-target) hance the heavy ruling.

Its the same with sniper rifles, theyre not actually heavy weapons, they just need the bearer to remain stationary to be able to aim accurately enough.

At it's core, it has nothing to do with what Markerlights would "actually" be... it's really just a game balance issue. Markerlights would be too powerful if they were Assault weapons.

I think that the Markerlight on a Fire Warrior or a Pathfinder should be a heavy weapon, but on a Stealth Suit or a XV-84 (the Markerlight Commander Suit), it should be an assault weapon as the Suit can keep the laser on the target.

Again...it's game balance. It'd either price itself out of use if it was increased to cover being an Assault weapon, as it'd be ridiculously powerful then. Keep them as they are.

Increase the price to 15 pts then. Without a Multi-Tracker you can't fire both the Markerlight and the Burst Cannon.

people if markerlight did what they attualy did they would do all 5 of the functions
they would launch seekers as many as they wanted, +1 to BS, -1 to cover, -1 to pining check, auto pass nightfight and targeting prioerty

i think they should be heavy wepoans for troops and assualt for jet pack units but they are not

You can buy a Stealth teamleader a Markerlight and an ASS... that's essentially what you're looking for, right?

if any current spec ops unit want to spot a target for a laser guided bomb, they use a big damn piece of kit that has to be readies, positioned, and a spotter accurately target whatever is gonna go boom.

jesus, its difficult enough to hit a moving target with a rifle when you're moving, using a marlerlight would be extremely difficult.
