Default According to the codex, a Fire Warrior only gets promoted after 4 years....

hello, i have a question about the tau promotion system. it says in the codex that they get promoted every 4 years for a test. my question is is there any exeptions to this? (e.g. som1 has shown amazing skill on the battlefield and has a far obove average about warfare than others?)

Tau are advanced as to there skills. Some never get past the lowest rank because thats what there best suited for and they do it well. Also some go the top rank of Shas'O, Not a lot by any means but a few. They don't advance in rank just to advance in rank. No, Oh i'm gunna become a Shas'O when I grow up! It's what is good for everyone.

Least that's what I've gotten out of everything I understand about Tau.

I'm no expert but I'd say no. That would create competition and hence hinder the greater good. Think communism or socialism; everybody is equal.

I would also have to say no. Kais killed more marines than any Shas'O and was not even promoted to Shas'ui. No matter how good one is on the field promotion involves more than combat prowess.

I really wouldn't use Kais adventure in firewarrior as a valid example of tau fluff.

Think of it as if you've shown promise after 4 years you ascend in rank, otherwise you're just team leader or moved into a different branch of the Tau military (tank crews, assisting with strategy, etc)

thats what i have thought, promotions arnt about your skill ont he field its the experience u have.

if u get a soldior just been trained for 4 days and happens to be better than a guy who has trained his whole life at actual combat, like stronger fast better aim.
the guy who has trained 4 days will probly kill more guys off, but what is an extra 8 men realy? not in game wise but in a real war. were on the other hand an experience vetren would be able to realize what to do (e.g there is a massive unholy monster and u have to get away, he would no how to get away since blasting at it with expert aim wont kill it.)

but the real question im trying to ask is are there ANY exceptions at all. i dont car eif its in the odd case but att all.

Tau do not seem to use battlefield promotions, although in some cases battlefield conditions may provide an alternative "Trial by Fire" for a candidate who was already eligible for promotion.

The way I see it is that Tau don't actively seek promotion...though if they stand out as particularly good at something, they are elevated if there's a reasonable indication they can do more for the Greater Good in that capacity. In any case, battlefield conditions themselves show that a warrior can prove himself readily without taking a formal test later. I'm not wholly sure how the system works, but to me it just is that if you wait around long enough, you get assessed...unless you otherwise prove that anyway before then, like in the heat of battle.

Given that my FW die very often, I would say that 4 years as a Shas'la would mean "survived" to promotion time.
