Default Tau Armored Company: Tatics and Suggestions

With the upcoming codex containing the highly anticipated piranha. The issue of the "Tau Armored Comapny" (TAC) comes back into the spotlight. Unlike Imperial Amored Companies (IAC), we do not need to put tanks and vehicles into troop slots to make it viable for it. Before we had up to 12 vehicles (6 DF from Troops, 3 DF from fast attack and 3 HH from heavy support). Now we can have up to 24 (6 DF from Troops, 15 P from fast attack and 3 HH from heaevy Support). With this, we can make very efficent and themed army list.

2000 Piont List

HQ: Ethereal attached to 11 FW squad and DF w/DL/FD= 210
Troop: 12 FW squad and DF w/DL/FD =210
12 FW squad and DF w/DL/FD =210
Fast Attack: 8 PF and DF w?DL/FD =186
5P (2 P w/Fusion Blaster) =310*
5P (2 P w/Fusion Blaster) =310*
Heaevy Support:HH/railgun+SMS w/DL/MT/2 Seekers =190
HH/railgun+SMS w/DL/MT/2 Seekers =190
SkyRay w/DL/MT =135**

Total: =1991

*This is the approxiate cost taken from the ForgeWorld experimental rules of the piranha. The base cost is 60 and it costs +5 for fusion blaster.

**This is the approxiate cost taken from the rumoured section. It is 125.

Tatics

Aggressive

A tactic I see too little off. This involves the charging of piranha and the dangereously close deployment of the Pathfinders. This is NOT for conservative players who are afriad to lose a piranha or 3. I would use the piranha to tank charge low LD enemy units such as a IG platoon or termaguant brood or Gaurdian squad or even a Space marine squad!. Or any other squad with a low strength weapon. Choosing the right unit to charge is very immportant as a piranha AV is only 11. So watch out for Heavy Bolters!

Tank shocking a squad out of the table is a bloodless way to get rid of the enemy. However, be aware that Tank Shocking (TS) a Gaurdian squad right in front of Fire Dragoon Squad is not very smart. The best part of TS is that even if they pass a Morale check for death or glory neams nothing. A shuriken catapult cannot even sratch the piranha. And laugh away when the "Emperor's Finest" can't sratch your skimmer with their bolters!

However, do not charge assault squads. Usually they come with at least 1 powerfist or some other equialent. This could also mean Space Marine squads are not a viable option as many Vetran sargents come eqquipped with a powerfist. But, do not be afraid of power swords/axe or whatever. They cannot hurt your piranha (unless they go to your sides).

While getting rid of expensive units without loosing your own is a nice way to defeat an oppenent. do not get it to your head. Don't think you can TS a Force Commander or Farseer from the board! It won't happen!

TS with DF is a very good idea too. Because they can take fletchette discharges (FD) they can would enemies before they attack. So a squad of IG would probably die before they can hurt you (though they can't in the first place).

Also, TS with a DF +FoF is an excellent way to get rid of pesky units and such. First TS and take a couple of models (like marines) and then soak them in rapid firing pulses.

As with the piranha don't try to TS asssault squads with DF. every though they have +1 more AV. They can still easily drop to the powerfist.

HH are good support units. DO NOT TS with them. There fire magnets. If the shootig doesn't get them. Then every single assault unit will. Same as SkyRay.

Defensive

This requires lots of cover and in my opinion not as effective as Aggressive. A more passive and conservative way to field this army (yay!). This requires you to deploy the drones from piranhas and DF and use them in the as a lure. Like the Patient Hunter technique (forgot the name in Tau) use them to get expensive enemy units in range of your railguns and markerlights. You should have your piranhas in flanks and in cover. When you them in sight, railgun them and seeker missle them. Most likely they would loos their expensive tanks and big baddies. Cross flank them with piranhas and deal a whole lot of damage.Tto finish him off FoF him. That is what "overwhelming Firepower" means...

However, this only really works with Dark Eldar or Blood Angels. This does not work with shooty armies. Like IG or Tau. They will not rush you.

Suggestions/Concerns

Like other low model armies don't count of not coming out unscathed. This is not a "noob" army where models are expendable. Timing is very important. Don't try for a 1st turn win. You must be in position before you attack. So be patient and wait till turn 2 or even 3 before you attack. This would save you a lot of tears.

Piranhas benifit from drones. Use them. When you attack, deploy them and use them as a screen. Tie up expensive units such as wraithlords and devsators. Also, do not send them alone. Not many AV11 skimmers live through lascannon fire very well...

This army lacks AP3+ or lower weapons. Thus DO NOT use this agaisnt SMurfs or Necrons. You will probably (more likely always) loose.

Conclusion

This is a very interesting army to play with as there are no battlesuits wahtsoever. In my opinion this is very potent. As there is lots of Anti-infanty and Anti-vehicle firepower. However, it lacks Anti-Smurf/Necron firepower. I will not suggest using this army unless you are very sure of your armies capabilities.

On a final note, This is VERY good agaisnt IG Armored companies.

Now we can have up to 24

Actually you can get 25. The Ethereal can take a Firewarrior Retinue that can buy a Devilfish.

Commanders are 1+ in the new Codex.

Well, thanks for the update Tonka.

I compiled a list of which armies these are good for:

Aggressive

-Orks
-IG (expecially armored comapnies)
-Eldar
-'Nids
-Generally, any army that relies on hordes, not very strong at shooting/assaulting,

Defensive

-Dark Eldar
-Blood Angels/Black Templars
-Gerneally, any army that relies on fast, assaulty units that you will know that they will try to rush you.

NOT to use Tau Armored Company

-Necrons
-Shooty marines
-Tau
-Generally, we don't have much (if not none) Ap3 or lower weapons to deal with them. Tau and Necrons will easily, I Repeat EASILY down your skimmers.

Gray Areas

-Sisters
-Grey Knights
-Generally, Sisters may have 3+ saves, but with T3, we can quite easily take them down expecially since they have such short ranged weapons. Grey Knights are very good marines, but since they lack numbers. assed pulsed fire can take them down.

(Thanks for Tonka for the commander update) Suggestions on using the Commander

Since a TAC would only have 1 commander (unless u want 2 or more from lite choices), he is either very exposed or ignored. We can use this to our advantage.

Very Exposed Commanders

Most players are afraid of crisis with BS4 or 5. Thus, they target them as soon as they can. In a Defensive TAC use him as the lure. Use a couple of drones from your skimmers to protect him (IC rules really shine here). Most oppenets would try to charge him because he is "assumingly" weak at assaults (He is Tau after all). He would probably ignore your other units in cover. Thus you can surprise him with skimmers and probably surprise him with you commander too as he takes don a couple of his warriors.

Ignored Commanders

I rarely see this so don't count on it. This is very good with an AgreesiveTAC. If your opponet concetrates more on other expensive units (HHs, Skyrays...) put him close to your skimmers. When the skimmers attack, deploy the drones. This would cover your commander as he is not as fast as them. After you FoF or soak them in pulse of fusion fire, they enemy is more likely to charge or fire back at you. Use your commander as a devastating counter-charge (the enemy is more likely to be reduced to a couple of men and they are easy to pick off).

not to bust your bubble but only 12 models can fit in a devilfish not 13. So 11 firewarriors +1bs 12pts and the etheral.

Obviously, this list is in its infancy. The 2 main models (piranha and the skyray) and the codex are not even released yet. Thus, this list cannot be roven accurate. However, the 12 model count is 1 thing I will change. Thanks.
