Default A new highly tested, and succesful tau tactic

Hello there, I have developed a new tactic which I have play tested in 5 games. I believe this tactic to be extremely usefull to those tau players who prefer static tau or just cannot afford devilfishies. This tactic is excellent for whittle down assualt units, but it is much like the FOF in that it should be used as a last resort.

Well without further adieu here it is!

This tactic involves at least two squads of fire warriors in a position like this

S1
S2

You can use more squads if you wish. S2 should be 8-10 inches away from S1 either in this formation or in cover to the left or right flank.

If an enemy squad assualts S1 when S1 does fall, S2 and perhaps even S3 or other squads can open up on the opposing squad, as shown in the dia gram below

Phase 1 : tau turn

Enemy1 (enemy1 is ready to assualt next turn)

S1(Squad one shoots Enemy1)

S2( squad two shoots Enemy1)

Phase 2: Enemy turn

Enemy1(assualts S1, by now should have taken casualties 3-5)
S1

S2(hangs back shoots at other targets or moves to defensive position)

Phase 3: Tau turn

Enemy1 (finished S1)

S2 (opens fire and finishes Enemy1, perhaps backed by another squad)

As you can see you force your enemy to take casualties, now keep in mind that by the time the enemy has slogged all 30" of your range to get to you they will have taken casualties making the job only easier for you warriors. You could allso have a staircase formation, but I have not tried that.

This tactic causes your opponent to do 1 of 3 things.

1. They realize the danger of their assualt and shoot you, after which on your next turn you shoot back.

2. They realize that its better to go down in style and assualt your squad in a suicidial move after which you destroy them with your other squads.

3. They realize what is happening and attempt to move into cover. Despite them moving away you save your warriors.

All of these options force you enemy to make decisions that can scar their battle plans.

I have tested this tactic in 5 games, the first 3 where against marines. Each time I was able to wipe out his assualt specialists, with this tactic and result in a victory using this tactic along with stealth suits and DS'ing Crisis suits. The only marine force of the three I lost too was a BT's force, I had not counted on the ability of rigtheous zeal to allow them to gain ground( despite playing the BT's for four years, bah I usually roll miserably for my RZ). Then next was against an ork force which I massacred thanks to this tactic, by the time he got into assualt range his men where battered and this tactic finished them off, his warboss trukk squad did prove problematic however untill a stray fusion blaster hit him >. The last game was against a Dark eldar force. A very shooty one at that, in fact he only had one squad of wyches to assualt with. They were killed after I used this tactic however the game was a loss as I was unable to assasinate his leader with My DS'ing crisis suits (it was a snake head mission).

All in all I find this to be a very usefull tactic however you must keep in mind that manuervering your warriors is key and you also must not rely on this. Again much like the Fish of Fury attack this tactic should only be used when in danger of eminent assualt.

I hope this helps alot of you out their with static tau armies!

Oh and please tell me what you think

Not bad. However, most Tau players (including me) are afriad to use FW as expendable units. FoF and this are COMPLETELY different however, as FoF is designed NOT to get units in assault. This however is getting units IN assault.

What I ment by similarity between this and FOF was that they both should be treated as last resort measures.

Unit spacing is a good tactic

Good to see it written out properly with some text diagrams.

In general, it's probably best to space out units >8" in an alternating pattern. I don't have that many squads of fire warriors, but it worked for me when I was starting off

I would see this as a support tactic, used in the (often inevitable) event that the Fire Warriors get caught in combat. In which case they have some backup and are able to deal with the assualting unit. Like the FoF, it shouldn't be a tactic that's to be depended upon, however it can be used 'just in case'.
