Default Banners and Rank Marks

In discussion with the one of the guys at my local GW store, he's thinking of modding a banner onto one or two of his Tau army. I thought "what shape would a tau banner be, and what would be on it?"

Opinion says Chinese/Japanese style banners, a pole with a short support arm off the top facing to the rear of the figure. The banner running the length of the pole, and out to the width of the support arm. As detailed here: http://www.samurai-archives.com/mon.html

They can be mounted in pairs I think. The Tech of the tau precludes the original use for the banners, that of identification of units at distance and in battle conditions, but they might be a hangover from the early days and hung onto for traditional reasons, or martial pride, or so the enemy knows who they're facing

But onwards...what sort of imagery goes on the banner?

And the other part of the question, do the Tau have rank markings apart from the bands on their scalplock?

Hmm. Yes. Well... We're all a little worried about Pink Squad.

An oriental styleback banner might be stylitically suitable, however banners are really not the Tau way. The Tau way of waris very similar to our own modern day millitary, and use camo not bright coloured banners for a good reason.

However its his army he can do what he like with it...

My infantry Shas'ui have the back banners (they're called sashimono, btw) you mentioned.
The battlesuits don't have any as I didn't see any way to attach them in a way that seemed functional and cool.
I've made them to look as if the banner pole is of the "Tau Plastic", that the battlesuits hipjoints, legs, elbows etc. are made of and the banner itself is some sort of sheetmaterial instead of flexible cloth.
I've decorated mine with one or 2 simple colored bands (dark blue) along the top and some Tau barcode in red in the lower rear corner.

My army is from Sa'Cea so has a very martial mindset, and follow a very traditional minded Shas'O.
They fight proudly in bright red armour and the Shas'ui on foot carry banners which serve a threefold function: dispay of pride, a point of focus for martial spirit of the unit they lead, and intimidation of the enemy.
(Not that they won't use camouflage, if the mission warrants it...)

Greetings, Modhail.

This is what I did. While agree that the Tau aren't really the type to use flashy banners, the models themselves will look cool, and sometimes that is all the justification you need.

Hm...........actually I'm thinking of this conversion too. Maybe I'll stuff this on the new commander suit. Make him special and shogun-like.

But what do you use as the banner? Paper? ???

I used a light-weight coated canvas for the larger banner, and a thin strip of plasticard for the banner on the pilot. Cloth ends up looking flowing, but it is a little harder to paint on and attach.

Canvas? that's kinda hard to do stuff on them. Can you do the patterns with marker pen or something?

I used a stencil-making kit for the Tau symbols, and tape-masking for the lines. The idea is just to cover the portions of the banner that you don't want color on. The coating on the fabric I used kept the paint from soaking into the cloth itself, which would have made the lines blurry.

I agree the banner is quite flashy and makes the suit look disporpotioned. Well, my banners are much smaller. My Shas'ui for FW gets a banner, my Shav're of my Crisis team get a banner and my Shas'o gets 2 (1 on each shoulder). The only other infantry units that don't get then are stealths and pathfinders.
