Default 3,6,12- significance?

so, I was just thinking; Imperial squads/ units are usually decimal. 5-10 guys as the basic blocks, sometimes 15 or 20. (or maybe 5-based; quintimal?)

anyway, Tau unit sizes seem to be based around 1,3,6,12- is there any reason given for this in fluff?

Not that I know of. But it does give them a different, more rounded feel. Ive heard some theories about it being the number of fingers on their hands, not counting the thumb or... just some wild stuff.

But as for in the fluff, nothing I have come across gives an explenation for this.

Tau happen to have three fingers.

Humans happen to have five.

5 counting the thumb, 3 not counting the thumb. Strange way to make that destinction though given GW it may be. You just never know with them...

well lets look at the max, to get a decent amount of versatility and firepower from the tau firewarrior squad you need 10 rifles, and 2 carbines (imho)

IG on the other hand have a hell of a lot of upgraded guys like medics, comms, and flag bearers.

As the song goes, 3 is a magic number.

Or maybe it's just a random number. Who cares about how the squad got that size what matters is how big it's going to be.

Vespids will break this pattern then.. the max squad size isn't a multiple of 3 :P

As far as I know, 3 is just some random magic number that they decided to base everything off. 3 is very significant to some people.. :

20 and 10 are also not devisible by 3. For "Tau" units 3 seems to be the magic number. For their auxilaries this is not always the case. Gue'vesa are the only ones who keep to the 3 rule and I dont think that was a good idea. Should have stuck with the standard IG squad sizes.
