It doesn't say anywhere specifically. It's probably just some random letters.. however, with naming etc, V is usually for Version, and X is usually for eXperimental, e.g. XM25 combat weapon = (experimental) model/make/mark 25.
I would guess that they're all different versions of battlesuits, however one can only guess why they might be experimental.

In tau(the language), it probably means mechanized armor or something, remember they don't use English the letters are translated into English but not the words.

seems like you speak Tau then.. fixed up your spelling, especially of 'engalish' -mace

Roman letters perhaps? XV = 15. But then comes the arabic 8 along and mucks things up... 15 + 8? 158? Or 23? Confusing.

The Eldar Rule:

"If any model with the special rule Eldar! is on the battlefield the player may instantly declare victory and arrogantly storm out of the room. They may also claim any models, cash or cookies that are in the room."

I want to put to the record that I wholeheartedly support this rule and think GW should adopt it whenever they redo the Eldar codex. Cash and cookies are always good, and arrogantly storming out is an underrated pasttime

Well the tau are a expanding race so they'd need all of Forge World's battlesuits to fight the ever expanding number of foes they encounter. Why would the X mean experimental? Crisis battlesuits and the other 2 codex suits seem to be mass produced.
