Default The Disruption Pod.....it's whats for dinner

A recent conflict of opinion arose in a game I had against a Chaos player when facing my Tau.

I had two Hammerheads on the field, both of which had the vehicle upgrade: Disruption Pods.

The point of disagreement came during turn 3 for Chaos. A Havok tank hunter team equiped with lasercannons managed to get line of sight at the left side of one of my hammerheads as it was moving across the field (a mistake on my part for leaving it open).
He went ahead and took his 4 shots and hit with 3, which caused me a bit of worry until I realized that the lascannons were likely close to their maximum range. A measurement check showed that the Havok team was 44" away, now taking the disruption pod into consideration his weapon's range was now reduced to 42" and would therefore miss the tank.

All wargear and vehicle loadouts were outlined during deployment so my opponent knew both that I had the disruption pod and the function it performed. However he contested that the disruption pod somehow made them an uneligable target for the team (stating the team would be unable to aquire target and hence unable to fire due to the pod).

I am fairly certain that it simply drops their range by 6" as stated in the codex and he simply overestimated the modified range of the Havok team.

Is there some sort of FAQ or something else regarding this situation? I managed to ressolve the impass with my opponent, just on the basis that we're good friends and managed to work it out. However I would like to avoid this situation in future games against less diplomatic opponents.

Advice would be appreciated. Thank you comrades.

I am a "noob" and I know this answer, it's in the rulebook first section under Shooting Phase. You select a target first, THEN check for distance. So his targetting of a distant Hammerhead with disruption pod is 100% his failure in leadership ability. Perhaps he's a newbie too?

I would assume that he wouldn't be able to shoot at other targets. The only time you're technically allowed to start measuring range etc according to the rules, is AFTER you've selected a target, and checking that the weapons are in range (page 22 of BFM rulebook). So seeing as he already chose a target, and found that his weapons weren't in range, with the disruption pod in use, he would've basically wasted that units turn of shooting.. (and so he can't claim they were an ineligible target, or go further and claim that he should get to shoot at another target.. - I would assume any target in LOS is an eligible target, its just a matter of whether they're in range or not - of course there are exceptions - night fight/stealthsuit etc)

Edit: Oh, thats basically what UN17 said, seconded :P
