Default Mech Tau and Imperial Armour 3

i'm a mech player who's taken alot of interest in IA3 and i was wondering if a couple of people might be able to answer some questions.
does IA3 help mech tau? will i see alot more lil fishies swimming in my army?
is the skyray really worth it? 180 points for a missile boat, usefull?
any help would be greatly appreciated.

If its just rules you want wait til the new codex comes out - that will give you the Skyray rules (which arn't all that exciting) and the Pirhana. 50 is a lot just for the Tetra rules (which are certainly useful, a fast mobile markerlight is nothing to laugh at) and a few crisis varients for your commanders.

Buy the book more for the fluff, which is really all it is, with just a few rules sandwiched inbetween.

it all depends on what your local GW store says about using IA models in store, or what your opponent thinks to the rules in the IA3 volume. if they say that you can't use them, then you can't use them for the game.

if you are able to use the IA rulz for your battles, then you will inevitably see more fishes in your army, mainly cos the tetra's and piranhas are so cool! tau land speeders in squadrons of 5?!!! and tau bikes that give and take more of a kickin than marines!???

i think that the preference on the skyray is a personal thing, myself, i prefer the hammerhead any day, simply because of the versatility that it has, the ion can take pretty much any infantry, and coupled with a pair of burst cannons, you've got 9 anti troop shots every turn. this said, the ion can also tackle quite a few light vehicles too. the railgun meanwhile has to be the meanest anti tank weapon in existance for non-IA 40k! give a hammerhead one of these, some smarts for annoying infantry formations, a target lock, and 4 seeker missiles, and this turns it into a dedicated tank hunter. the AA rules for the skyray are nice, but i dont think that it's worth it, due mainly to; in the event that it survives long enough to fire all its missiles, then it only has a smart missile system or burst cannons for defence, and it isn't much good after that.

hope this helps.

More than likely, if you design it that way.

To be brutally honest, no. The Skyray is just a "Hey, I can carry seeker missiles...oooohhh" type of model. That 180 points can field 18 seeker Missiles on your exisiting tired and trued vehicles (Devilfishes, Hammerheads, etc); then you can make your whole army a "Missile Boat"!

Actually, there was a discussion about the relative utility of the rumored GW version of the Skyray:
http://forums.tauonline.org/index.ph...0423#msg210423

Initially I had the same opinion of the Skyray variant as does Aunny. However if the rumors are at all accurate, the decision might not be so simple. If you are interested in looking into the Skyray, the link is worth a read. (Even if I do say so myself)

Thought from what I've heard though this isn't being carried over to the new codex - though I guess you could claim its a FW vehicle?
