As with all Tau opponents, basic rules apply. In all honesty, our tactis of shooting never varies much (as in the principle - not the style and choice).

My opinion, first the fastest things need to be obliterated, raveners, gargoyles, all the things that can get to you lines fast, ignore the big behmoths, they can't do you much harm stumbling accross the field. Once the speed threat is eliminated, as long as there are no immediate threats, try knowking out some synapse creatures, zoanthropes the biggest example. your enemy will often place these around the flanks to hold the troops together, with these gone, the low Ld 'nids will more easily run to the mass fire you can produce. Finally, relax, ignore the horde coming towards you an work on one unit at a time. Splitting your firepower will be your downfall. Allocateing it well is also essential. Firewarriors are fantasic against any of the troops. Crisis suits and stealth can really damage the moderate troops such as raveners, biovores, warriors, etc. In my opinion, a railhead with submunition can cause consdierable damage to the troops, will retaining immense firepower when you finally want to obliterate that tyrant or carnifex.

What D said:

Shoot the fastest stuff first. IF afterwards, shoot biggest threads, concentration of fire. IF possible, take out synapse, as it will make the army crumble.

If you have a railhead, then the pie plate is your best friend. If you don't then you may want to invest in one.

yes, but a ion head (preferably guided with lights) can take out warriors and other synapse creatures like nobodies business. Of course you should also bring a couple of rail heads to dish out the pie plates, but don't forget the marker-lights, seeker missiles and ion cannons. there not just for noob marines. a markerlight can deny the cover saves to an entire gaunt brood and seeker missiles are the thing for killing of 3+ save carnifixs (sorry if thats not spelled right) as using them means that you can continue to use your hammerheads to kill of the fast, swarmy things.

Thank you again
Killing off the synopes donst work with this guy (he uses only geneslealers with rending claws, and flexes) the pie plate kill of the gean stealers good, but some do infiltrate, and all have stuller, he is maxed out them then has massvie 150 pts+ flexes! (funy think is it is my list lol)
and i will tell you how it gos, i have to play the guy tonight...

Uhm, no. Ionheadss do not equal a pie plate.

2 pie plates will, theorically, will wipe out an entire squad of warriors, who have at best 4+ sv.

2 ion head shots will not, at best it will kill 3.

HUGE difference.

Swarm Tyranids: These are like Orks, but a little harder as they are faster (Hormagaunts are beasts and everyone has Fleet of Foot). Thism akes mechanized Tau preferable so you don't get into combat. Stealthsuits are great against them, as they infiltrate, can pump out tons of shots a turn, and have jetpacks to escape danger. Also use lots of Railheads, as the submunition will blow away half a squad. Also make sure you use Kroot, as their large masses of shots will decimate Termagaunts, Hormagaunts, and Genestealers and are the only thing that has a chance of winning close combat against them. As long as you stay mobile, escape close combat, and pump out lots of Pulse Rifle, Burst Cannon, and Railgun Submunition shots, you will prevail.

Monstrous Creature Tyranids: Now these are a bit trickier. Instead of tons of weak stuff, you have a few very strong and tough guys. Carnifexes are deadly, especially versus your battlesuits, but are less deadly versus your skimmers as they hit on a 6+ usually and are extremely slow. Hive Tyrants are weaker, but Winged Hive Tyrants are VERY deadly. Aim all of those Ion Cannons, Railguns, Plasma Rifles, Fusion Blasters, and Missile Pods at that thing. Against tons of monstrous creatures, Hybrid lists are better. Taking 6 Broadsides and an Ionhead or a Railhead will offer enough firepower to kill off those Carnifexes, Hive Tyrants, and other stuff, along with your strongFire Warriors and battlesuits.

For a mix of the two, just combine each of the strategies, maybe using 3 Broadsides.
