Default Rules question, Tau Jetpack Assault.

Following are the quotes from Codex Tau, and rulebook:

"A model with a jetback can either:
  • Move 6" in their movement phase, ignoring intervening terrain as they fly over it like a model with a jump pack;
  • Move up to 6" by walking or hovering just above the ground, as normal infantry
[unnecessary info cut]
An unbroken model with a jetback that is not in close combat may always move 6" in the Assault phase whether they are within 6" of an enemy or not. [unnecessary info cut] This move is always made like a model with a jump pack." (Codex Tau, page 16, important part in italics)

"Assault Phase
Jump infantry assault 6" like normal infantry. This move is slowed by difficult terrain in the same way as other infantry, because the units tend to cover the last few yards of a charge on foot."
(WH40k 4th edition rulebook, page 55, important parts in italics.)

So, if a tau jetback unit is in the assault phase, and decides to assault enemy (rare, but can happen), would the assault move happen "on foot" like with jump infantry, or flying with jetpack, like jump infantrys move?

Movement phase - they can walk or fly
Assualt phase move - they fly away - this is the one that can always be made, in any direction etc..
Assualt phase charge - they walk/run on foot

There was a thread discussing/clarifying this ages ago, but it's long lost in the years that have passed.

since you can hover or walk for the movement phase could you just walk normally through terrain so you wouldn't have to roll dangerous terrain tests for a stealth team or crisis suits?

All assaults into or through difficult terrain are done on foot. This basicly means that the attackers charge the last few steps on foot as coming out of the air leaves them exposed. So you always roll a difficult terrain test for assaults and never simply jump into the terrain.

mace is right on target with this.

Doesn't it say you ALWAYS move like a jumppack in assault. I never tested for difficult terrain and my opponent said nothing of this after he read this line.

And a jet pack can walk or run but it is not making an "assault" it is moving in the assault phase. An actual assault is done on foot.

Correct. You can just sit behind a terrain piece, 'waltz' into it, and just jetpack back out. No difficult/dangerous terrain tests at all if I read the rules correctly.

Yes - that's what you quoted. And then it says that its slowed by difficult terrain etc because it's on foot, not doing a jetpack boost..
