Default What to paint first?

Hi,

I could lay my grubby hands on a complete Tau army from someone whom was quitting the hobby.

It consists of the following:

-2 'commander' crisis suits (with the sword)
-2 ethereal (one with blade, special character?) and a 'regular' one
-5 crisis suits
-4 stealth suits
-30 odd fire warriors
-close to 20 Kroot incl a shaper and 2 Krootox (dogs with guns?)
-20-odd gundrones
-8/9 pathfinders
-2 devilfishes
-3 broadsides
-hammerhead with railgun
-hammerhead with ion cannon

(plus a wide variety of assorted bits)

(plz do not ask how little I paid; I feel as if I robbed him )

Anyway;

the question is;

What to paint FIRST in order to get to an effective, flexible 1500 point force?

paint the whole lot. then pick and mix for your games.
the lists are up to you, though my vote goes to 2 hammerheads, 2 broadsides, 2 fish squads, kroot and crisis suits. throw in some stealths if you want, and bring to the boil at 1500 pts.

None can step before them, they are the first, proud in their strength and jealous of their renown. Through the storms of the warp they come, upon the very tides of terror, but of such dangers they are uncaring. They are the Space Wolves, the Undefeated, the bane of the Emperor's foes."

Welcome to the board Elkerlyc:

Personally, I would paint in order of games playable.

Starting example:

Combat Patrol

What will be useful for 400 point combat patrols?

1 - Kroot (12 to 16 of them)
2 - Fire Warriors (8 to 12 of them)
3 - Stealth Suits (about 4 of them)
4 - Crisis Suits (but only max of 2)
5 - Devilfish (just one)
6 - Pathfinders (8 of them)
7 - Gundrones (6 of them)

Then start to think about 1,000 point games later, in which case you may want to start with:

1 - Hammerheads (with the railgun)
2 - Rest of your Crisis
3 - Rest of your Firewarriors
4 - Another Fish
5 - Rest of Stealths
6 - Your XV88's
7 - Last Hammerhead

Etc., etc., ....

Basically think about your 400, 1000 and 1500 point lists. Then paint what is used on all of those lists first, and pick up the rest later.

Cheers!

Since you have the Farsight models (sword ones) you could do a farsight army pretty easily. Model one as Farsight and the other as your own commander, model or paint or whatever. Paint the stealths and crisis aswell. Paint and mount 24 of the Firewarriors in the 2 Devilfish and paint the Railhead and the broadsides. You can only have 1 broadside, 1 stealth team and 1 hammerhead in a Farsight army but you can easily do that. In a Farsight enclave force you cannot use etherials or kroot anything but the Tau stuff goes, just some with restrictions.

Alternatively for larger points you can just use the sword suites as commanders and throw in the other Hammerhead and the kroot for a nice 1500 point force or larger perhaps.

Hmm, did I miss that in the codex? I've read it only once and just flicked through it but cannot find the rules for a Farsight army.

Can you tell me where to look?

[move]Thanks a bunch in advance...[/move]

It's all in Farsight's entry, which is towards the middle or end of the book. I think it's a bad idea though, I hate the farsight army. Too limiting.

Farsight armies are good at small points, very bad at larger points values, its in farsights entry towards the back of the codex. Farsight himself is a vicious character but you cannot relly on him too much or build a strategy around him, like all Tau armies it has to work together and the limit of certain units hurts badly.

First, study the Codex. Then, IMHO, paint a bunch of FW, a Crisis suit, another bunch of FW, a Crisis Suit, etc.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that you can't have 2 wound models (crisis suits) in CP.

As far as I know the limits are no models with more than 2 wounds, so 2 and under is fine, and that you cannot field any tanks with higher than a total armor value of 44. So Devilfish and Rhinos just squeeze in. Also you are not required to bring an HQ.
