Default Starting a Tau Army, Need tips..

Im going to convince my folks to get me some tau models come christmas time, I've got a Harlequins army and a Salamanders army.. now I wana try my hand at Tau.. I had a small force that I traded off awhile back.. it was a devilfish apc and a set of 12 firewarriors.. I tried them abit and I liked their reliablity in the field of battle dispite their draw backs..

Im into how stealth suits and how they perform.. I like the fact they look so I've got to include them in my force.. I also would like atleast 1 APC and one firewarrior detatchment to start off with.. I've come to love the kroot but that is for my second project to make a kroot army.. I'm lovin crisis suits lots and pathfinders are really nice too.

How can I set up an army so I can have a devilfish/firewarriors and lots of stealth suits and perhaps 1 or 2 crisis suits? Im getting the special Forge World model the one that looks too much like a gundam with a shield and dual gun.. anyhow I think I might make him my commander.. but funds are somewhat tight so I might be getting the suits offa Ebay or other third party sources..

That model is Shas'O Rym'yr and yes you can use him as a normal commander, either convert his gun to something else or just use it as a twin linked plasma rifle.

A Shas'el or O has a crisis battlesuite so that gets you one, including a crisis team in your army gives you 1-3 more. You can then include 2 stealth teams which are 6 each.

The Firewarrior Squadbox has 8 Firewarriors and a Devilfish, you MUST take one Firewarrior team at all times in a Tau force.

For starters I would suggest this:

Shas'el, twin plasma, shield genn (rym'yrs model)
12 Man Firewarrior team
12 Man Firewarrior team
Devilfish APC
Hammerhead Gunship

That gives you a core force that you can use fairly well. I would suggest you waite on purchasing stealths or the codex until the new one is coming out as there will be a new codex soon and entirely new stealth suite models, though if you like the old ones now would be the time to get them.

Dont include pathfinders until latter in your army. They really shine in large battles (1500 points or more) but in small battles they are targets for early death.

If you want the Battleforce is a good start though there may be a new one coming so again a waite and see approach would probably be best.

I hope that helps, Welcome to the Tau!

I suggest you ask for money and then wait until the new Codex comes out, things are being redone; not only models, but rules also. So yeah, wait on that, because the new codex could dramatically change the way Tau players execute strategies.

Stealthsuits are, essentially skirmishers. they're useful, but by no means should you make them the backbone of your army.

that honour resides with your hammerheads. 2 minimum. then troops. at least one mechanised FW squad. and at least one kroot squad. then throw in whatever tickles your fancy...

None can step before them, they are the first, proud in their strength and jealous of their renown. Through the storms of the warp they come, upon the very tides of terror, but of such dangers they are uncaring. They are the Space Wolves, the Undefeated, the bane of the Emperor's foes."

Just a note; this is more of an army list question. Check the stickies about "Starting Tau" and also check out the stickies in the Army List board as they will have a few good sources for you and some helpful information.

Now, as for what you have, what you like and what you'd like to do, here's a few tips:

1 - Think about not maxing out fire warrior squads. We have a minimum size and maximum size. Try taking the middle ground of 8 men teams. You'll get more out of 3 8 man teams than 2 12 man teams (my opinion).
2 - Use your Crisis suits to supplement what your troops and heavies cannot accomplish; early game, this will be anti-armor. Late game, it will probably be anti-armor and anti-heavy infantry (infantry with 2+ and 3+ saves).
3 - Stealth Suits can be wonderful units, but you don't have to max their squad sizes, a 4 man team can be quite useful for it's points.
4 - Don't neglect the usefulness of Gundrones and you will end up with quite a few. Small 6 man teams are handy.
5 - Consider your Devilfish APC as a means to gain ground and capture things; not really an in-your-face weapon, until much later and in larger supply.
6 - Generously buy Kroot and use Kroot. They're cheap and very effective at things you don't want Firewarriors doing.
7 - Wait until you're more comfortable with the army before you start using pathfinders. Do a search for more information here.
8 - Have fun.

Just to give you an idea how to incorporate the things you listed that you liked, into smaller games on a smaller budget:

HQ - Shas'El Commander; Missile Pods; Another Weapon of Choice; Multi-tracker
Elite - XV8 Crisis x 1; Missile Pods (twinlinked) or another weapon of choice
Elite - XV15 Stealths x 4
Elite - XV15 Stealths x 4
Fast - Gundrones x 6
Troop - Fire Warriors x 8; Shas'ui; Devilfish; Decoy Launchers
Troop - Fire Warriors x 8; Shas'ui
Troop - Fire Warriors x 8; Shas'ui
Troop - Kroot x 16

That involves you purchasing 2 Suits, 8 Stealths, 2 Fire Warrior boxes, 1 Devilfish box, 1 Kroot box (basically $200 roughly).

The only problem is that you're lacking some key anti-armor elements, which a Broadside can fill, or a Hammerhead, whichever you prefer.

Cheers and welcome to the Tau
