Mech Tau tournament tactics

I am preparing for a tournament at the end of the month, and I was thinking about strategies and tactics and I thought I would share my general approach to tournament games with fellow TOL members. I have played in 2 tournaments with my Tau, and have done well ( 9-1 win-loss ).

A great deal of my success is due to the tactics I learned on this forum, specifically from Tonkaís mech Tau site and other helpful members like Malveaux and Dizzy. This post will incorporate general mech-Tau tactics that can already be found on this forum, with specifics on how to approach a tournament game with a mech tau force.

(* My previous experience came from 3 years of playing Ulthwe Eldar in 6 tournaments )

#1 Rule- This is just a game, and sportsmanship is very important in your final score so have fun!
So itís pre-game time and you are at your assigned table, meeting your opponent and looking over the scenario about to be played. At this point there usually is a few minutes before the game officially starts- do not waste this time!* You should be:

1) Carefully reading over the scenario for all details ( victory conditions, special rules,* battle point modifiers ) and checking out the terrain on the table.

2) Choosing optimal game conditions ( meaning do I want to be defender or attacker?, which table side do I want ? Should I go 1st or 2nd ? ) ** defender is preferred in my experience.

3) Checking out your enemy- begin to assess your target priority before deployment. Read over his ( or her ) list carefully.Target priorities will depend on the situation but usually will begin with the fastest units ( bikes, wartruks, etc. ), and armour killers. There are plenty of other threads on this specific topic. If you have your target priority down before deployment it is easier to know where your units should be placed.

4) Formulating a general plan: which way will I move? Should I feint left and then send every one right if he goes for it? Any good general knows that a battle plan usually changes once the enemy is met, but you should still plan out a general movement strategy.

Ok itís now deployment time! It is crucial to victory that you deploy properly. If you have broadsides and a railhead always deploy the railhead 1st- that way he may have to put down a big tank that you can then line up for your deploying broadside. You target assessment will help here.

Try to figure out your opponent, does he express a fear or hatred of a specific unit in your army? If he does use that to your advantage ! Chat him up, and ask him a few questions to get an idea of who you are facing. If he keeps his tanks hidden from your railguns or goes after your stealth suits with a vengeance you have the advantage of knowing what he will do especially if you present him with an opportunity. This can allow you to dictate the flow of the game ( sometimes! ), which is what any player wants.

Focus your firepower on targets until they are destroyed or superfluous, and then move on to the next. If a target is near death make sure all guns have a secondary target ( if possible ), there is nothing worse than wasted shots!

Keep moving, stay out of assault and generally try to roll up a flank. The main choice I make at the beginning of each game is do I go left or do I go right? ( specifics depend upon the situation ).

Always keep the victory conditions and battle point modifiers in the front of your mind, and go after them with focus.

Don't dawdle- play as quickly as you can- during his turn you sould be planning your next 2 turns of movement and shooting so when it comes to you there is no humming and hawing, just killing ;D

If this post helps anyone then I have payed back a small bit of the help I have already received. J

Haha, the thought of you being polite and considerate 'with a vengeance' is really amusing to me! ;D

I'm meaning the gameplay smart-a$$ ;)

Greeting a new player with a vengeance..

"Hi how are you? I'm fine, I hope the tournament has been good for you, has it ? I hope so as I am looking forward to this game, I play Tau, here's my army list and may I take a photo of your army, Thanks, it looks great, how long did it take to paint, oh best setup the game shall we?"

"..err, Hi..."

...and we will crush Christian's Daemonhunters and Nick's Space marines with our combined force!
I'm thinking an illustrated battle report of our upcoming 2 x 1500 point battle will be in order...

I don't have enough screen space for the carnage! :D ;)

seriously though, tournament wise, how do you utilise your Tetras to co-ordinate seeker fire best ? Do you hold your transports back or create a fighting convoy all the way in ?

The answer to your question depends upon #3) from my post- I always pick my seeker targets before the game begins ( bikes, devastators etc. ) and set my tetras up accordingly. The fighting convoy is usually moving up a flank while kroot and broadsides hold position and shoot and tetras buzz around.

It is the classic " hold his nose and kick him in the butt " or " pin and flank " tactic.

It is assuring to know how alike we think. You have the confidence of experience, I'm simply unsure if my 'battle plan' is sane.

I like to run fighting convoys, whilst the aux's and a couple of other units hold down the fort.

In total aside.. I was reading the Warseer thread on possible upcoming Tau equipment. The devilfish may get SMS instead of drones. Now whilst this isn't awe striking, it just hit me that it means the Devilfish is running about with both Burst Cannon AND SMS system (where as I thought SMS replaced the cannon). The 'Fish just became a half-breed hammerhead... imagine what kind of charge you could perform with that....

Re: Mech Tau tournament tactics

It would help: on avg. the current set up with drones and a TA for the burst cannon would kill .68 T4 3+ save models, and with a SMS ( the TA helping all of the shots ) and burst cannon you would kill on avg. 1.03 T4 3+ save models.

A whopping 52% efficiency upgrade- worth considering !

Burst Cannons can be replaced for a SMS, but it costs +20 points, according to IA3. Sorry... :'(
