Default Buying your Tanks (Not a GW Business discussion)

One of my fellow Tau players told me recently that for Tau tanks, your better off always buying Hammerheads. You get all the spare parts, and tis an easy way to give DFish SMS's from Taros.
Anyone else do this, or is it not as good as it first sounded?

being hammerheads are more expensive you would hope you get more value. For me, the TAU are a bit of a difficult army to convert pieces into. Although I do believe kroot and the tanks (devilfish and hammerhead) are an exception. By all means if you would spend that extra on the hammerhead do it. You get the choice of an Ion cannon and Rail gun. Rail guns are what you are looking for, those extra pieces would be good for a devilfish though, guess it all comes down to personal preferance.

See the Modular tanks guide linked to in my sig (the big pic, you can't miss it)

Its a very, very good idea. You basically have a hammerhead that you can also use as a devilfish when needed etc. See that thread for more info/pics/detailed guide.

Of course if your doing a mech Tau army its not worth it to have 7 Hammerheads. Plus paying the extra for the Hammerhead when you are only using the Smart Missil System is a waste. Its up to you though.

Forgot to mention though - 3 Modular Hammerheads at most, and then just devilfishes for the rest..

The spare parts are only really useful if you have Hammerheads to use them on, and there are only so many hammerheads you can field. Add to that, you're going to have heaps of spare parts if you only want to use the DF sms. The DF Kit may get an update to add the SMS if its an official option.

How many times have you been plugging that link in your sig today maCe? :P

Buying Hammerheads gives you more scope for an army, as using that link maCe has been supplying today you'll see you can easily convert between the two, but that is probably less help if you play Mech Tau as you'd want to use both the Hammerheads and Devilfishes. Far more useful for Hybrid or Static Tau though, it's even more use if you sometimes play Farsight instead of normal Tau...

It's all around a better deal to get a haMMER HEAD.
If you put a burst cannon on the nose and haved removeable wepons you can convert it to a devil fish in 5 secs.
The extra burst looks great to.

Buy a SkyRay !

You get the Hammerhead and the Skyray bits in the box, so you can play Devil, Hammer or Sky as necessary.

and you can always sell unwanted convert srpues for the skyray on ebay ;D

The Skyray is also slightly cheaper in the US than the Hammerhead(not a whole lot so don't get too excited, off memory we're talking like a buck...), though I noticed on the UKonline store it's the same price

I was al ready to say it, then Bright chimed in! *lol* Anyways, if you're getting the HH for the extra bits, buy the Skyray for the same price and get even more bits! Buy 3 of those, then if you need more tanks, just get the Devilfish. I'm sure the drones in the DF kit could be converted to be a mount for the modular BC and SMS. Although since you can mount drones on everything, you could always just keep them as drones and swap'em around between the tanks.
