Heya Elessar

In the Important Topics sticky, you'll find this little gem on ethereals, Teri's Tau Tactica: Ethereals and Morale.

Anyhow, with a quick click of the Search button, I type in "Ethereal" and here's some articles that it fired my way:

http://forums.tauonline.org/index.php?topic=4602.0 (Are Ethereals Useful?)
http://forums.tauonline.org/index.php?topic=4500.0 (Ethereals and leadership/morale tests)
http://forums.tauonline.org/index.php?topic=7740.0 (Do you use Etherals?)
http://forums.tauonline.org/index.php?topic=6296.0 (Mitigating Morale Mishaps)

And as for fluff reasons, here's why Ethereals are a favorite of mine: Ethereal: Favorite Unit & Why.

Cheers!

nope, don't have the HQ slot left(I run 4 monat crisis and a team of stealths), besides, I hardly think he's worth it in mechTau armies...

I would probably use one when I play higher point value games, but this far I have only played 1250p games :/

They're definitely worth it in a static or hybrid list with firing line. They're fairly easy to protect, as long as you have a few units that aren't going anywhere.

In a mech list they're much harder to protect.

Haven't used mine much since 3rd edition. His value comes out when you have lots of dismounted units, and static lists don't work so well anymore.

My army has a few static elements left but before long they will all be mounted. As previously said Etherials arent too good in a mech Tau list.

On the contrary...

An ethereal can simply hitch a ride in a devilfish if you wish. Mal already said everything I would say about ethereals, especially the lure portion. In a mech list, leaving the ethereal on the ground isn't so bad either. Just set up an ambush for those units heading after him, and your opponent just gave you half his army if you play it right.

For sure, however, the ethereal should only be taken in games where enough units prosper from his presence. I look at it like this; trademark item for the imperial guard costs 10 points per unit, and has the same advantages and disadvantages as an ethereal. So if I bring 5 units that can use the ethereals's presence rule, he's worth it. If I bring more, he's a bargain.

I always take one...but I have 2 static FW squads to babysit him, not to mention 8 pathfinders. The rest of my army is mobile, so I guess that would make me hybrid, huh?
