Default Pathfinders tactic idea

I'm sure this has been done or talked about, but I'm trying to fit in some cheap markerlights into my Farsight list. I was thinking of having my riptide body block my pathfinders, so in the movement phase move him out of the way so the pathfinders can light something up and then move him back in the assault move. to either obstruct my opponent, or atleast give them a better cover save.

The riptide isn't really bulky enough to completely block line of sight, which means that unlike the 'Sea Turtle' tactic with fire warriors and a devilfish (devilfish moves, fire warriors shoot, devilfish flat out moves back into place), the riptide won't provide quite the same level of defense. Really, putting your pathfinder in some area terrain will probably do about the same job defensively (not a whole lot of help though...).

Hmm, I like the idea of pathfinders but they are too easily picked off, Would a buffmander with marker drones be more viable in a farsight army? I have a ton of crisis suit troop choices.

My preferred method of adding markerlights to a list is a Mark'O (commander with 2 missile pods, target lock, and drone controller, accompanied by 2 of his own drones and joined to a unit of 4 drones). They are slightly tougher, have slightly better armour, and the mixed unit gives you more wound allocation options. Where the marker drones really shine though is that they have jump-shoot-jump, because all of those above bonuses to survival are nothing compared to not being able to be shot at all.

There are other options though. Some people like to integrate their markerdrones into battlesuit or broadside units where they cost a little less, but lose a little flexibility since they are bound to their unit.

Lastly, as primary light sources go, there are Tetras from Forgeworld. Tetras are definitely worth considering. They are cheap, accurate, fast, and more survivable than a pathfinder unit by a landslide. A lot of players still take these for a reason. They were just that good when they were released (waaaay back in the old days where Tau were doomed to mediocrity).

Secondary light sources such as skyrays and sniper drone teams are also something to think about. They are both highly survivable, accurate markerlight sources, but they cost a lot and don't put out a lot of lights (because they are really doing other things and the lights just happen to be there). If you don't have a lot of stuff that needs support (for instance if you go really heavy on broadsides and units with alternative methods for buffing like a buffmander crisis team) you can get away with just using these guys for a unit or two that need a little extra kick.

I'd use tetras, but the store I play at doesn't allow Forgeworld In our monthly tournament, I think i'll try using the Buffmander next game.

and just so you know if you do a farsight bodyguard you can pack your markerdrones with them as well unless you want to keep them seperate. Let us know how it goes!
