Lightbulb Tactica: [C.A.L.T.R.O.P.S.] (peanut gallery, most welcome!)

[C.A.L.T.R.O.P.S.]

T rap

1. Corral:
-) Have sufficient Infiltrate/Scout/Run-Moves to get close enough to require immediate turn 1 response of the enemy forces; force them to stand still with Heavy weapons, and hopefully get them to charge with their C.C. units (hopefully disembarking their units, delaying any rapid assaults downfield).
-) Have sufficient Outflank to keep them from being near any table edges.
-) Have sufficient Deepstriking to keep them balled-up and defensive, making them conscious of their 'backsides'; feeling exposed.
-) Have sufficient tarpit to keep their heavy weapons tied down. Alternatively, precision shot will eliminate units pricey models; good too.
-) Killpoint missions will count on careful, cost-effective *chew* (where even sole survivors would be ideal). Not everything has to be tau! Worst case, your lure is mute a turn (no move, psychic, shoot, or charge - but CAN overwatch!), unimportant. Be sure you have supporting fire range with tau forces, and not the allies if this is done lol.

2. Activate:
-) Be sure to place [Dakka] in ideal firing lane, to allow for both the EWO-zone and Supporting Fire distancing.
-) Be sure to deploy your forces within comfortable range of Objectives.
-) Be sure to utilize terrain advantages, and at the least denying advantages the enemy can use.
-) Be sure to field enough EWO to take out your choice of any particular unit, from any direction that they'd come. (First Blood!)
-) Be sure to have supporting fire enough to cleanly cut into units of your choice. (A certain Threat. Make them pay their best!) Ensure it will be within comfortable distance of both your Corral and your Lure - as you'll need the consecutive phases of [Dakka] to wash over the enemy forces, no matter what they do! (Movement hampered and led astray, they'll shoot their best at the priorities, and seek the safety found in CC. Every time they choose, they pay).

3. Lure:
-) Give the opponent cc targets that aren't worth their cc-units. Don't let them be able to cc beyond this lure, into your [Dakka] line.
-) Give the [Dakka] line some cover saves w/ this unit. If this is destroyed instead of your [Dakka], awesome.
-) Ideally, removing enough models during overwatch can deny them charge distance to meet CC! A total win for us!

4. Trap:
-) Being that so far the opponent hasn't punched through into your lines, yet, they're going to invest the remaining forces to that exact effect...
-) EWO their Dakka - as they won't be able to charge into cc til next turn.
-) Supporting fire - twinlinked rocks, 2+ wounds are ideal in a snapshot environment, reroll wounds/AP (tankhunter/monsterhunter/preferred enemy DOES apply!)

5. Reinforce:
-) Have Outflank/Deepstrike enough to patch-up, tie-up, eliminate threats, and capture objectives - in place of what has been "fed" to the opponent so far.

6. Objectives:
-) Ensure you're not neglecting the Victory Conditions - ABSOLUTE PRIORITY.
-) Zoning your [Dakka] line to include your necessary objectives, would be a good idea lol. One that moves even just 6" a turn, amazing.

7. Position:
-) Have your backside where you want it - and make every dice count!
-) As much as possible yield to your opponents by your priority of targets, not theirs!

8. Sustain:
-) Be the last one standing. (Especially in killpoint missions).
-) Don't underestimate the power of presence. A single model can change a game. There are heroic (horror) stories of pintle-mounted storm bolters - deserving their own hall of fame haha

I kept it very blank - open for creativity.

Please lets collaborate, and develop slots to fill with units that perform well!

Ty for your time.

-) Kroot: infiltrate offers outflank and board presence. Not strong, but I like that they're essentially a mob unit - but can they do it? i5 hounds for CC, Oxen for S7 shots. Snipers w/ infiltration, 10-20 at 7pts each? Not horrible ... Killpoint missions may prove catastrophic...

-) Stealth Suits: shroud/stealth gives them 2+ saves in any sources of cover, infiltrate them close, 2d6 them thru terrain (but keep in it if possible), and launch off ATS precision shots at their key units (disembarking transports w/ your [Dakka]). Scoot back outa sight. If assaulted, they aren't terrible expensive - and are *fair* in CC (for tau lol!)

-) Firewarriors in Devilfish: (or get Pathfinders (outflanked?) and have the scout transport deploy empty, scout move ahead of the firewarriors, and embark them for a 12" (just in range of access point on transport) +6" move forwards (for opponents whom you know will desire to pop your devilfish and assault the warriors coming out. It's like you get a homing beacon for your overwatch placement - thru disembarkation).

-) Pathfinders (w/ or w/o Devilfish): scout move, disembark and spray! Sadly 5+ save may prove lacking, but cover saves are decent.

A:________
-) Jet Pack units are able to be effective in just about every aspect of what 'activate' is all about!

T:________
-) Broadsides: EWO/CDS ... brutal. 2+ wounds, AP okay en masse, twinklinked options. SMS no doubt handy in tricky terrain situations, able to ensure this overwatch/EWO can happen.

Shadowsun, with Pathfinders - in a devilfish. Move it into the center of the table, get 3+'s, they fall out - get 2+'s for coversaves... absorb ridiculous amounts of fire and possibly lose very very little.

Dual fusions, 6 shots of S6 AP1, even can reroll 1's (w/ additional markerlight support?)

If they spill out on opposing turn they deploy for free - and can use them heavy weapons next chance they get!

Cost: 315, 14 models

1 Commander Shadowsun, 155 pts + (Command-link Drone)

(Piranha Squadron)
1 Piranha, 40 pts
1 Piranha, 40 pts
1 Piranha, 40 pts
1 Piranha, 40 pts

_______________________________________

Deploy Shadowsun infiltrated and out of sight (or in a sniper squad of kroot), and on first turn move out pirahna's 6", get the drones within coherency disembarked into her unit, then flat-out the pirahna's in front after shooting is done.

Grants her definite 2+ cover saves, and cheap drones to fall - with enough threat to shoot down (WARLORD!),

all in all... how would you think this would fare as a 'Corral' option?

Kroot squad with a couple ox's! Threat them with outflanking S7 rapid fire... just enough to have them carefully tuck their rear armor in tight, pull more conservative positioning - all for a troop choice which was compulsory!

________________

Deploy Shadowsun w/ infiltrating sniper kroot.
Outflank ox kroot.

Piranha move, disembark, flat-out and impede movement.
drones become unit with IC (Shadowsun).

Shooting phase, her drone grants pietide the reroll, and fire!

Her 2nd drone gives initial hammernator status to her unit, with its 3+ invuln save.

Fall back into broadsides should things get rough...

Considering sniper teams rather than 2 broadside units...

Grant that needed VRT and flamer for overwatch. Gun drones are powerful w/ BS5 TL'd, S5 reroll AP - nocover...

Have buffmander in squad, absorbing coversaves and stimming off fails of 2+'s, then fallback into broadsides whereas shadow is neat even if on her own!
