i have a Small but successful Tau army. i am looking to buy some new units for a 1000p army and would like advice on what would make a Kick A** 1000p Tau Army.

Well, what do you currently have? Also, are you looking to play static, mech (recomended) or hybrid?

Basically, if you start off buying lots of firewarriors and crisis, youll do fine. Or better yet, a battle force. It comes with 12 FW, 20 kroot, 3 crisis, and 10 drones. Oh and some trees for terrain. All that for 90. Seems how the Crisis are $20 each, the FW are 30 and the pack is only 90, your basically getting the kroot and drones for free!

I bought 3 Battleforces and they were a big troop help, not to mention crisis.

Battlepacks, hammerheads, stealth suits. And if you want to play mech, then get a few Devilfishes!

Its all a matter of opinion, I dont care what he plays, BUT it seems for beginners Mech is much easier. I mean, its so hard to destroy a skimmer, and to make things worse, if they roll a 5, they will have to roll again (provider they take Decoy Launcher). Instead of having 33% chance of normally killing a skimmer, you now have a 12%. Not to mention that the Devilfish is much harder to get AP than a normal skimmer due to the the greater armour of the vehicle.

I say it a safer way of taking your troops across the board. Not to mention the Fish of Fury tactic that it provides.

Also, the hammerheads tend to be a bit more capable of lasting than the boradsides. Not to mention that the HH can move AND shoot the railgun.

He asked for advise, I gave him my advise which has given me much succses.

My army consists of 3 rail heads, 18 stealth suits, 9 crisis, 48 fire warriors, 48 kroot, 1 etheral, 3 devilfish (i need 2 more) 2 broadsides, 30 gun drones (i love the pesky guys) and 8 of the under-reated pathfinders (i know they are a rip off for thier points, but could make things easier for killing bigger, more threatining units).

With static tau, sure you would have more firewarriors, consequently, it takes much longer to cross the board and get into position to kill more guys. a 90 pt devilfish might not seem worth it at first, but trust me. Read the Mech Tau Bible.

My 1000p list that has a very high win ratio is this:

HQ
Shas'O

Elite
Shas'Vre
Shas'Vre

Troops
Firewarriors (10) Mounted
Firewarriors (12)
Firewarriors (12)

Heavy Support
Hammerhead Gunship

I might also have some drones in there but thats the basics. Some suits, lots of warriors and of course the main battle tank.

i have been playing warhammer for about 8 years i have just about every 40k army and have won local tournaments with space marines and ranid's.
but i have only just started my tau army after borrowing my friends.
at the moment i have

1 Shas'O
1 Firewarriors (12)
4 drones
1 ethereal

and am looking to have a well rounded army (which is hard given Tau are crap at close combat) Mech has its down falls.

Have you read the Mech Bible? Mech may have its downfalls, but id like to know what you think they are? Anyway, A tau Battleforce seems like the right choice for your next purchase. And I back up vash with his 1000pt list, it is the core of many peoples lists, and it is a great one to.

i put the mech tau bible in my psdt, I suggest reading it.

Reasons for going Mech:

they can travel the board alot quicker
They can move close to the enemy (within rapid fire range) and not get harmed due to FOF
Devilfishes are a safer way to cross the board
Hammerheads have a prolonged life compared to broadsides
Hammerheads can SHOOT and MOVE
THey move quicker so you can get to key points such as table quarters or objectives quicker than static

THats all I can think of, but feel free to add on if anybody would like!
