Question Starting an Ally

My Tau force is pretty well flushed out. I've got about 5000 points assembled and painted with a fair amount of FW and lots of extra firepower (like 3 Barracudas). Now it's time for an ally or two, but rather than starting a second army and buying everything I can get my hands on, I'm thinking of a coordinated, functional allied detachment by design. What are some peoples' recommended allied detachments? With what point values and loadouts? And, most importantly, how well do they benefit the main attraction??? (my oh-so-pretty Tau!)

Fluff wise, Space Marines, Eldar and IG work as allies.

Of those three, I actually like picking up some Eldar. Eldar can be really specialized, yes, however, the new Eldar rules have them able to move, run, shoot. This makes them a very mobile force for stop gaps that can actually do decently in close combat.

Alternatively, Space Marines are jacks of all trade, however, I see them always as point sinks for what you get.

No. What I am saying is that my Air Support has lots of Ground Cadre.

If a Land Raider dies to a rail gun, and no one was around to see it, does the kill point still exist?

Worth pointing out that playing TauDar isn't the best way to make friends. I personally find our Codex can handle anything thrown at it, so I don't do Allies much.

I guess, what I'm specifically looking for is an Ally who can fulfill certain roles that Tau find challenging: Surviving Assault (or Assaulting) and Shrugging off Psychics.

Eldar seem best fitted to the latter. Especially if you run Enclaves with the Talisman, rolling Deny on 4D6 passing on 5s or even 4s is pretty much a guarantee.

Eldar aren't fantastic at CQC except in the dedicated units like Howling Banshees. They're fast, but typically weak.
